2026 FIFA World Cup Semifinal Bracket: Schedule and Results Update
The 2026 World Cup is nearing its climax with only four teams left competing for the title. This edition, the largest ever with 48 nations participating, started in June across North America. After weeks packed with fierce contests, the tournament has been whittled down to these final squads, each convinced they can claim victory.
The semifinal matches promise high stakes and feature some of the world’s top players battling on a global stage. These games mark the moment when the championship dream feels close enough to touch.
Upcoming Semifinal Matches
The winners from these two encounters will advance to the final scheduled for July 19. The teams defeated in the semifinals will face off in the third-place match on July 18.
Details on Semifinalists
- France topped Group I and defeated Sweden, Paraguay, and Morocco to reach this point.
- Spain led Group H and overcame Austria, Portugal, and Belgium.
- England emerged first in Group L, beating DR Congo, Mexico, and Norway along the way.
- Argentina won Group J and progressed past Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland.
Quarterfinal Scores Recap
With just four teams left, the semifinals follow a straightforward format. Two matches decide which teams will compete in the final, while the losing sides will play for third place. The path here has been longer than usual due to the expanded tournament size, requiring teams to have successfully passed through three group games and three knockout rounds.
Resolving Tied Matches
If a knockout match ends level after the regular 90 minutes, it moves into extra time. This consists of two 15-minute halves plus stoppage time, making up a 30-minute extension. There is no golden goal rule; the match must be decided by the end of extra time.
If still tied, the outcome is settled by a penalty shootout. Each team selects five players who take turns shooting. If the score remains tied after these five attempts, sudden death rounds continue until one team leads after an equal number of shots.
Advancement in the Tournament
The tournament began with 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. Each team played three group matches, and the top two teams from each group advanced directly to the knockout stage. Eight third-placed teams with the best records also qualified to make up the Round of 32.
The knockout phase is a single-elimination bracket where winners move forward and losers are eliminated. To lift the trophy, a team must win five consecutive knockout games after the group stage.
