Youssouf Fofana Bids Farewell to Ivory Coast National Team

Youssouf Fofana has drawn a bold line under his international career with Ivory Coast, signing off with an emotional farewell that circles back to the highest point of his journey – lifting the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations trophy on home soil.

The 31-year-old midfielder chose his official Instagram account to say goodbye, addressing Ivorian supporters directly and with unmistakable clarity.

"Dear Ivorian fans, the time has come for me to turn the page. It is with immense pride and deep gratitude that I had the privilege of fighting for my country. Winning the continent's greatest trophy was a childhood dream come true for me, and these memories will be forever etched in the hearts of millions of Ivorians.

His route to that orange shirt was anything but straightforward. Born in Paris, he came through the French system and represented France at youth level up to the under-18s before switching allegiance. His senior international breakthrough arrived under Marc Wilmots, who handed him his first call-up for Ivory Coast and opened the door to a new chapter in his career.

The club journey has been just as varied. Fofana spent time in Manchester City's academy, moved through Fulham, and later shared a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, a measure of the level he has operated at. He is currently on loan at FC Porto from Rennes, having played a decisive role in helping the Portuguese giants secure the domestic league title last season.
