Youri Tielemans Repairs Relationship with Aston Villa Fans

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to repair his relationship with Aston Villa supporters after comments about his transfer to Manchester United sparked a backlash.

The Belgium midfielder, 29, joined United this summer on a five-year deal after the club activated a £35m release clause in his Villa contract. He leaves Villa Park after three seasons, having arrived from Leicester City in 2023 and gone on to make 134 appearances and score 10 goals.

On United’s pre-season tour, Tielemans initially spoke warmly about his time at Villa, crediting the club with helping him rediscover his top form and saying they had put him “back to my best level”. Then came the line that lit the fuse.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them,” he said.

Those words did not land well in Birmingham. Sections of the Villa fanbase bristled at the implication that their club sat beneath United in the pecking order, particularly after three seasons in which Tielemans had been embraced as a key figure in their rise.

The reaction was sharp enough for the midfielder to address the issue publicly. He turned to Instagram to clarify his stance and offer an apology.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote on Thursday.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

“Wishing the club the best in the future.”

It was a swift climbdown from a player who knows exactly how quickly a legacy can fray once a big move is sealed. Now he begins life at Old Trafford with one question lingering in the Midlands: will Villa fans remember the goals and graft, or that one pointed comparison?
