Yan Diomande's Historic Move to Real Madrid

Yan Diomande never had Liverpool on his mind. Not really.

While Liverpool were preparing a huge bid and the Premier League rumour mill whirred into life, the Ivorian forward was quietly plotting a very different future – one that ended at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports from the Liverpool Echo claimed Liverpool were ready to put £86 million on the table for the RB Leipzig attacker. Serious money, serious intent. Leipzig, though, pushed the valuation past the £100 million mark. That stand-off stalled negotiations, and when it became clear Diomande was leaning towards European champions Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool walked away.

PSG, too, backed off when they saw the numbers Leipzig wanted. For a moment, it looked like the deal might drift. Then Real Madrid stepped in.

The Spanish giants moved decisively earlier this month, structuring a deal that could rise to £120 million and securing one of the most coveted young forwards in world football. It is now being billed as the biggest transfer for an African player in the history of the game.

And if you listen to the people closest to Diomande, this is exactly how he always imagined it.

Michael Yormark, co-founder of Roc Nation – the agency that represents the 21-year-old – lifted the lid on the conversations that shaped the move.

“Nathan Campbell, Diomande's agent, sat down with the Ivorian player, and they talked about his dreams and ambitions,” Yormark said.

Out of that meeting came a crystal-clear statement from Diomande himself: “I want to be the best player in the world, I want to win the Ballon d'Or, and I want to win titles, and my biggest dream has always been to play for Real Madrid.”

Once those words were spoken, the path was set.

“We had to put in place the right plan to achieve his dream,” Yormark explained. “We built a team around this young player. This deal represents a big moment for all of us too. We took an ambitious young man and turned his ambition into reality.”
