Xabi Alonso Seeks Clarity on Enzo Fernández Transfer Saga

Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernández saga off his desk and out of his dressing room.

With Manchester City weighing up a fresh move for the Argentina international, the Chelsea head coach admitted he is desperate for clarity as one of the window’s longest-running stories drags into its final weeks.

City circle back as Chelsea hold firm

Fernández’s future has hovered over Chelsea’s summer. Early on, the noise came from Spain, with Real Madrid strongly linked before stepping away and cooling any suggestion of a bid. That left the door open for Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City, who have since pushed their way to the front of the queue.

Chelsea drew a line in the sand two weeks ago, setting a deadline for any club willing to meet their £120m valuation. City let that date pass without testing the Blues’ resolve. Now, fresh reports suggest the Premier League champions are ready to come back anyway, even without having met those conditions.

The result is a familiar tension: a player of huge importance, a club insisting on their price, and a rival giant deciding how far they are willing to go.

Alonso wants answers

For now, Alonso is planning with Fernández, not without him.

The midfielder returned to full training and was included in the matchday squad for Chelsea’s Premier League opener on Monday night. He started on the bench but was introduced in the 65th minute, helping the Blues close out a 3-2 win and offering a reminder of his control and composure in tight moments.

Asked after the game whether Fernández would still be his player when the window closes, Alonso did not pretend to know the answer.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

The message was clear: he wants a line drawn, one way or the other, and soon.

Outgoings take centre stage

Whatever happens with Fernández, Chelsea’s priority for the rest of the window is trimming a bloated squad.

Liam Delap is in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest as the club look to shift players who sit on the fringes of Alonso’s plans. Mamadou Sarr is also close to an exit, while Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are all expected to follow him out of the door, either on loan or in permanent deals, depending on the offers that land.

Dario Essugo has been made available for a loan move as well, another sign of Chelsea’s determination to streamline the group and create space for the players Alonso trusts most.

For now, though, everything feels tied to one name. Once the Fernández question is finally answered, Chelsea’s window – and perhaps their season – will look very different.
