Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez Will Feature Against Luton

Xabi Alonso insists Enzo Fernandez will be part of Chelsea’s plans against Luton on Thursday night, even as Manchester City circle with growing intent.

The Chelsea head coach confirmed he expects the midfielder to be involved in the Carabao Cup second-round tie at Stamford Bridge, despite the mounting noise around his future.

“Yes, so we expect that he's involved,” Alonso said. “He has trained, he's training really well, he's a good professional and he will be involved.”

The backdrop is anything but quiet. City are widely expected to move before the transfer window shuts on September 1, with their interest driven by head coach Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez during his time at Chelsea.

The tension around the Argentine was laid bare on Monday night. Introduced from the bench in the 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, Fernandez was met with a split verdict from the away end – boos from some Chelsea supporters, loud backing from others.

He has been open about wanting to leave, yet remains in full training and available for selection. For now, Alonso is treating him as part of his core group.

Asked directly if he wants to keep Fernandez, Alonso did not hesitate over the player’s quality but accepted the situation is fluid.

“We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities. He has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop.”

Chelsea’s stance on a potential sale, and whether it depends on securing a replacement, remains deliberately opaque. Alonso refused to pin himself to any hard-and-fast rule.

“It is always about understanding the context, the situation, timings, circumstances, so there is not a defined rule for everything,” the Spaniard said. “You need to know how things have worked, what you want, what you want for the future, so I don't have the rules in stone. We need to assess each situation.”
