Wayne Rooney Warns of Massive Blow for Manchester United Over Gabriel

Wayne Rooney has warned that losing 15-year-old sensation Gabriel would be a “massive blow” for Manchester United, as Europe’s giants close in on the prodigy who has already asked to leave Old Trafford.

The gifted attacker, who turns 16 next month, has become one of the most talked-about teenagers in the academy game. Scouts from Madrid and Barca are tracking him closely, waiting to see whether United can salvage the situation or whether the youngster will walk away before even reaching his first professional deal.

What has sharpened the focus is what he’s already done on the pitch. Gabriel announced himself on the European stage with a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah, a performance that backed up the hype and underlined why he is regarded as one of the brightest prospects of his age.

“I have seen JJ grow up, he has been in [my son] Kai's team,” Rooney said on the Stick To Football podcast on Disney+. “Anyone close to it knew that was coming. In fairness to Manchester United they have done everything, absolutely everything, to keep him at the club.

“The club have treated him probably differently to the other players because he is such a special player. I know, I recognise that, because I was that player at Everton. I was getting that treatment at Everton.

“As a club, you need to do [it] to try to keep the better players. It's disappointing because he is such a top player and a lovely kid. You never know whether it's gone too far or whether there is a chance for him to stay.”

Rooney’s words carry weight not just because of his status, but because he recognises the pattern. A teenage phenomenon, courted by bigger clubs, at a crossroads before even turning 16. He sees in Gabriel the same blend of raw talent and early expectation that once surrounded him.

He did not hold back in his assessment of the youngster’s ability.

“He is a top player,” Rooney said. “His ability, his balance, he has shown he can go up the ages and score goals. The next step is first-team football where it's different, and you never know until you're in there.

“But he's such a special talent who understands the game really well. At some point this season he would [have] made his debut for the first-team, I'd imagine, so that's where it's disappointing.”

That line stings for United: Rooney believes Gabriel was on the verge of a senior debut this season. Instead, the club are fighting to keep hold of him before he even gets near Erik ten Hag’s squad.
