Virgil van Dijk Defends Cody Gakpo Amid Manchester City Interest

Virgil van Dijk has no interest in playing it cool. Not when it comes to Cody Gakpo. Not with Manchester City circling.

With City in talks over an £80 million move for the Dutch forward, and Tottenham Hotspur also having registered their interest, Liverpool’s captain made his stance brutally clear after the 2-2 draw with Nottingham.

Asked if he wanted Gakpo to stay, Van Dijk shot back: “What do you think? He's a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players.”

No ambiguity. No diplomacy. Just a captain protecting one of his key men.

City push, Liverpool resist

According to The Athletic, City have emerged as Gakpo’s preferred destination as the window ticks towards its close. The champions want him. He is open to it.

Liverpool, though, are not in the mood to fold.

Van Dijk leaned into that theme.

"I don't think there's any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we're going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don't."
