Vinicius Junior Stays at Real Madrid, Arsenal Shifts Focus to Alvarez

Vinicius Junior was edging into the final year of his Real Madrid contract. That was all it took. The rumours came flooding in.

Across Europe and into Saudi Arabia, his name was being floated. Agents made calls, clubs listened, and the idea of prising one of Madrid’s brightest stars away from the Bernabeu briefly flickered into life. With Cristiano Ronaldo still cashing in out in the Middle East and Premier League heavyweights constantly hunting for elite attackers, the market was ready for a blockbuster.

For a moment, Arsenal were pulled into the swirl.

Mikel Arteta has been reshaping his forward line. Leandro Trossard has gone, Gabriel Martinelli is expected to follow, and that left-hand channel suddenly looked like the perfect stage for a Galactico. Vinicius, a recent Ballon d’Or contender and a picture of consistency in Madrid, would have been a statement signing of the highest order.

Christos Tzolis has hit the ground running since his move to north London, his previous spell at Norwich helping him settle quickly. He offers energy and promise. Vinicius would have offered stardust.

Instead, the Brazilian chose security and status in Spain. He signed a new deal at Real through to 2032, closing the door on any Premier League move for the foreseeable future.

For former Everton and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry, speaking to GOAL via BetVictor Online Casino, the whole saga always felt familiar. Classic, even.

“I was buzzing to see Vinicius Junior linked with the Premier League. With Vinicius off the table, attention has turned back to La Liga – and to a World Cup winner who already knows the Premier League.

Julian Alvarez, now at Atletico Madrid after his spell with Manchester City, is understood to be exploring a way out of Diego Simeone’s side. The Argentina international has the pedigree, the work rate and, crucially, the experience of English football that makes him instantly attractive.

Arsenal have been linked. So have others. The fit, though, is not obvious to everyone.

Barry, whose long-standing record for Premier League appearances was overtaken by James Milner last season, admits Alvarez’s situation caught his eye.

“I was surprised to see that Julian Alvarez wants to leave Atletico, but I understand why they'll keep him. He's a great player, his work rate's incredible,” he said.

“He'd be a great team-mate, I'm sure, to play alongside. I was surprised by the links with Arsenal. I think it's probably similar to what they've already got.

“I'm not sure they would have needed him, but there would definitely be interest from other Premier League clubs. But yeah, I think if [Diego] Simeone is that strong on keeping him, I'm sure he'll stay for another year at least.”

Barcelona lurking, Arsenal watching

Arsenal are not alone in monitoring Alvarez. Barcelona, short of central striking options and under constant financial strain, have also been circling. Their need is obvious; their ability to pay less so.

The Spanish champions’ restricted budget may yet shape the outcome. If Barca cannot move, the path for a Premier League return opens a little wider. Arsenal, already active and ambitious in the market, will be aware of that dynamic.

They have started their title defence with authority, brushing aside Coventry on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 campaign. The squad looks strong, but not complete. There is still room for one more decisive move.

The clock is ticking. The window shuts on September 1. Vinicius Junior is locked in at Real Madrid until 2032. Julian Alvarez is still at Atletico, with Simeone digging in.

The question now is simple: who blinks first before deadline day – the clubs chasing firepower, or the forwards who think they’re ready for a new stage?
