Victor Osimhen: The Striker Manchester United Needs

Victor Osimhen’s name has been circling around England for years. Now, with goals flying in for Galatasaray and Manchester United still searching for a ruthless No.9, the noise is growing louder.

From Europe’s fringes to centre stage

Osimhen’s European journey did not begin with fanfare. Wolfsburg gave him his first shot, but his real breakthrough came in Belgium with Charleroi, where a sharp loan spell announced him as a serious prospect.

Lille picked him up and, in 2019-20, he turned a “promising” tag into something more concrete with a prolific season in France. That form pushed him into the spotlight and earned him a high-profile move to Napoli, where his rise became impossible to ignore.

In Italy, he did what elite strikers do: score when it matters. Across the 2022-23 campaign, he found the net 31 times in all competitions and drove Napoli to a long-awaited Serie A title, ending a 33-year wait for the Scudetto and putting himself firmly on the radar of Europe’s richest clubs.

Premier League scouts were already watching. After that season, they were practically camped outside his door.

Premier League giants circling

United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all been credited with serious interest in the Nigerian. All four have studied the numbers, watched the runs in behind, the headers, the left-foot finishes, the right-foot drives. All four have, at one time or another, considered making their move.

Osimhen, though, chose another path. He is now in Turkey with Galatasaray, where his output has remained ferocious: 65 goals in 78 appearances. Those are fantasy-football numbers, delivered in real time.

At 27, he looks built for the Premier League. Pace that stretches defences. Power that bullies centre-backs. A penalty-box instinct that turns half-chances into match-winners. The profile is obvious. The question is who will act.

Cole’s verdict: “He scores goals”

When that question was put to Andy Cole, the answer was blunt. The 1999 Treble winner knows what a Manchester United striker is supposed to look like, and he sees it in Osimhen.

“He does. He scores goals,” Cole told GOAL, speaking in association with Unibet. “He scored goals in Italy and he's scoring goals in Turkey as well.”

Cole did not dress it up as a simple transaction. “There’s many different factors in signing a player from a respective country,” he said. “It's not all about just the salary or the transfer fee. There could be many different things that go on.”

But the football side? On that, he was clear. “If he does come to the Premier League, which I think he will be very good in the Premier League, you never know who he'll go to.”

That last line will sting United fans. Because while the club hesitates, rivals watch the same clips and read the same reports.

United legends make the same plea

Cole is not alone. A string of former United players have effectively been waving a flag that reads: “Sign Osimhen.”

Patrice Evra did not bother with tactical jargon when asked what United need at Old Trafford. He cut straight to the point: “A striker, someone who scores a goal. I think that's what I'm looking at. That's why for me, Osimhen is the best. He’s a perfect example.”

No talk of “false nines” or “rotational forwards”. Just a finisher.

Louis Saha, another ex-United striker who understands the weight of that shirt, has been just as emphatic about what the Nigerian could bring.

“I really like Victor Osimhen. He's definitely got the character, he's got the quality,” Saha said. He pointed to the forward’s journey as proof of his pedigree: success in France, a title in Italy with Napoli, and then a starring role in Turkey with Galatasaray.

Saha did not pretend the move to Istanbul was his dream scenario. He called it “a move that he probably didn't want, let's be honest.” But the response from the player has been emphatic: goals, and plenty of them.

“He’s scored goals at every level. He’s got Champions League experience,” Saha added, before homing in on something United have lacked for years. “He’s got the type of personality and charisma that this United squad could really benefit from.”

Built for the Old Trafford spotlight?

Saha went further, describing Osimhen as “a transformational signing for Manchester United.” That is not a phrase used lightly around a club still trying to rediscover its identity post-Sir Alex Ferguson.

He pointed to the pressure Osimhen carried at Napoli, where he led the line for a club desperate for a first title since the days of Diego Maradona. He delivered. That, for Saha, is the key argument.

“If you think about the pressure that he was under at Napoli, firing the club to its first title in 33 years, then he’s the perfect man to lead the line for Manchester United,” he said. “I think he would have a huge impact at United. I would love to see the club hierarchy move for him, I think he is exactly what we need.”

The message from United’s former strikers and leaders is aligned: Osimhen is not just another option. He is the option.

The numbers back them up. The medals back them up. The performances under suffocating expectation back them up.

Now the decision sits where it always does at Manchester United these days — in the boardroom. With Premier League heavyweights all having weighed up a move for Osimhen before, how long can United afford to wait before someone else turns all that admiration into a contract and a shirt number?
