How Tuchel Stopped Ronaldo's Chelsea Move

During Ronaldo’s turbulent second spell at Manchester United between 2021 and 2023, Chelsea had a real opening to sign the Portuguese star. The move never materialised, and the key figure who shut the door was then-manager Thomas Tuchel.

American owner Todd Boehly, who briefly doubled up as Chelsea’s sporting director, explored the idea in the summer of 2022. Stepping into his first transfer window in charge, Boehly met super-agent Jorge Mendes and, according to The Athletic, was genuinely intrigued by the prospect of bringing CR7 to west London.

The timing made sense from Boehly’s point of view. United had just finished sixth in the Premier League. Ronaldo, despite his goals, was at the centre of a storm at Old Trafford. Commercially and globally, the appeal was obvious: one of the game’s biggest names, available at a moment of uncertainty.

Boehly saw opportunity. Tuchel saw a problem.

Fresh from winning the Champions League the year before, the German coach had a clear idea of what he wanted his team to look like. Ronaldo, for all his pedigree, did not fit that picture. As reported by The Athletic, Tuchel “made his firm opposition to any deal for the Portuguese forward very clear on several occasions.”

That resistance proved decisive. The proposed move stalled, then vanished. Ronaldo stayed at United a little longer before his acrimonious exit and eventual move to Al Nassr. Chelsea moved on without him, and the image of Ronaldo leading the line at Stamford Bridge remains one of modern football’s great what-ifs.
