The window is open, the clock is ticking, and the money is moving. With clubs scrambling to reshape squads before the September 1 deadline, some of the summer’s biggest sagas are starting to harden into clear lines.

Villa brace for £50m Watkins bid as Jackson looms

Aston Villa are standing firm. They value Ollie Watkins at £50million and believe Al Hilal will eventually blink.

The Saudi Pro League side have already seen four bids rejected but remain locked on the England forward, who is keen on the move and the significantly higher salary on offer. Villa, for now, are unmoved. Their price is set. The expectation inside the club is that Al Hilal will finally hit that number if they want him badly enough.

Behind the scenes, the succession plan is already in motion. Villa are pushing ahead with a £65m move for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, a deal that would effectively install the Senegal international as Watkins’ replacement and reshape Unai Emery’s attack in one stroke.

Monaco circle Spurs’ Pape Matar Sarr

In north London, another midfield domino could be about to wobble.

Monaco have joined the chase for Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr, adding their name to a growing list of admirers. The French club are scanning the market for midfield reinforcements as they brace for potential movement around Lamine Camara, who has attracted offers from Crystal Palace and interest from Chelsea.

If Camara goes, Sarr is firmly on Monaco’s radar.

Grealish left waiting as City keep every door open

Jack Grealish’s future is the kind of storyline that tends to explode in the final week of a window.

Manchester City are keeping every option on the table for the 30-year-old. He has rejoined the first-team picture, coming off the bench in their opening two league games, but that has not settled the question of where he will finish the season.

Everton, where Grealish spent last season on loan, remain in touch. Their chief executive Angus Kinnear has confirmed the lines of communication are still open. City, for their part, have not ruled out a permanent sale, another loan, or even keeping him – though that last scenario could come with limited minutes.

Enzo Maresca underlined the uncertainty after Sunday’s win over Bournemouth, saying it is his duty to coach Grealish and get the best from him, but stressing there is still a week to go and “we will see what happens” with him and others.

Around Grealish, City’s wider business is moving fast. Omar Marmoush is due for a medical at Tottenham today, while Nico Gonzalez is finalising his switch to Newcastle. City are also signing Palmeiras winger Allan Elias, and a formal bid is expected to go in for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez as they attempt to reinforce midfield.

Liverpool balk at £80m Minteh price

At Anfield, the search for a winger has hit a financial wall.

Liverpool have stepped back from Brighton’s valuation of Yankuba Minteh, which is understood to be closer to £80m. The 22-year-old Gambian, currently sidelined with injury until October, had been targeted at around £50m by Liverpool.

That gap has pushed the club to explore other wide options rather than get dragged into a fee they consider excessive for a player who cannot feature until well into the autumn.

There is interest in one of their own as well. Celta Vigo are understood to be keen on midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, who began his career with the Spanish club, though Liverpool have yet to receive a formal approach.

Forest push on multiple fronts

Nottingham Forest are deep into a busy, layered window.

Talks have opened with Celta Vigo over right-back Javi Rueda, with Forest discussing an £8m deal for the 25-year-old, who only joined Celta from Real Madrid in 2024.

Tottenham have asked about Forest full-back Neco Williams, but the expectation is that he stays at the City Ground, where he has become a key figure.

Forest’s midfield rebuild is also in focus. As previously reported, they remain in negotiations over a £13.6m move, including add-ons, for Corinthians midfielder Andre. The 20-year-old only made his league debut a year ago, but Corinthians are holding out for more, sensing Forest’s urgency and the player’s rising profile.

All this comes as Forest edge towards a £45m deal for Liam Delap, a move that would add yet more firepower to Nuno Espírito Santo’s options.

Ipswich land Palacios in £23.5m statement

Ipswich Town are not content just to survive at the top level. Their spending says as much.

The club are finalising a £23.5m deal for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios, with the 27-year-old having agreed a four-year contract. It is a signing that underlines Ipswich’s intent to plant themselves firmly in the Premier League landscape rather than simply pass through it.

There could be an outgoing in the same area of the pitch. Ipswich want £9m for midfielder Anis Mehmeti, who has offers on the table from Wrexham, Birmingham and Derby. His sale would help balance the books after the Palacios outlay but also open another slot in Kieran McKenna’s evolving squad.

Osmajic exits Preston for Genoa

Lower down the pyramid, Preston North End have lost a key forward.

Milutin Osmajic has completed his move to Genoa, a departure manager Paul Heckingbottom had already flagged as likely over the weekend. He praised the business done so far to replace outgoing players but admitted the squad has been heavily thinned.

“We've lost a lot of players,” he told BBC Radio Lancashire. “We've still got a lot to replace and now Milly is another one we've got to replace.”
