Transfer Window Closes: Premier League Clubs Eye January

Transfer window shuts, but the market refuses to sleep.

The Premier League’s summer business is officially done, yet English clubs are still at the centre of a restless European market, with late medicals, failed bids and January plans already being drawn up.

Arsenal quiet, but plotting

Arsenal’s Deadline Day never caught fire. Their ambitious move for Julian Alvarez went nowhere, and the striker stayed put, leaving Mikel Arteta without the marquee forward signing the club had chased.

There was movement, though. Gabriel Martinelli sealed his switch to Saudi Arabia on Thursday, a significant departure from the Emirates. Andria Bartishvili has already undergone a medical as the Gunners reshape their options, but the real heavy lifting may now be pushed to January.

Arsenal made a late play for Inter captain Lautaro Martinez once the Alvarez pursuit collapsed. They were ready to go big for the Argentina international, only for Inter to shut the door. Martinez later confirmed Barcelona’s interest in him was genuine, yet he chose to remain in Milan, committed to chasing more trophies with the Nerazzurri.

That left Arsenal empty-handed at centre-forward. The club’s recruitment team, though, is not done with its wish list. Interest in Vinicius Junior and Alvarez is expected to resurface in the winter window. Vinicius, who had been open to the idea of joining Arsenal, ultimately signed an improved deal at Real Madrid when the Spanish giants decided to keep him. Alvarez, meanwhile, stayed at Atletico Madrid after his preferred move to Barcelona was blocked and Arsenal failed to sway him.

Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi also remains on the radar. His breakout campaign has been interrupted by a pre-season injury, but Arsenal are keeping him in mind should injuries bite and attacking reinforcements become urgent.

Chelsea rip up the script again

Chelsea’s window ended in chaos and big numbers. Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City in a British-record-equalling £125million deal, ripping a key piece out of Xabi Alonso’s midfield on the eve of the season.

The club thought they had his replacement lined up. A deal for Lamine Camara was agreed, only for Monaco to walk away at the last moment. The search for a new midfield heartbeat immediately shifted to Spain.

Pablo Barrios has now emerged as the leading candidate. Chelsea are considering a €100m offer for the Atletico Madrid midfielder when January opens. The 23-year-old has grown into an important figure in Madrid, but Chelsea believe a huge bid might test Atletico’s resolve and hand Alonso another technically sharp operator to rebuild around after Fernandez’s exit.

That wasn’t the only move they tried to pull off. Talksport reports Everton turned down a £65m bid for James Garner in the final hours of the window, unwilling to lose the midfielder without time to find a replacement.

There was also a near miss in Italy. Santi Aouna claims Chelsea had a verbal agreement with Roma for Manu Kone, with club owners directly involved in talks. The deal collapsed when Roma ran out of time to source a replacement and Gian Piero Gasperini vetoed Kone’s departure.

Off the pitch, Chelsea Women made a significant call of their own. Erin Cuthbert has been named club captain for the 2026/27 season, taking the armband from Millie Bright after the England defender’s surprise decision to retire in April. Now in her tenth year at the club and already on 301 appearances, the Scot steps into one of the most demanding leadership roles in the women’s game and knows exactly what it carries.

Richarlison races Turkey’s deadline

The clock is merciless for Richarlison.

Tottenham have left the Brazilian out of their Premier League squad and are in talks with Trabzonspor over a move before the Turkish window slams shut at midnight local time, 10pm in the UK. Personal terms are said to be agreed; the clubs are now haggling over the fee.

Everton had previously struck an agreement worth an initial £25m to bring him back, but Richarlison could not agree a contract, closing that door and leaving Turkey as his only route to competitive football for the rest of the calendar year.

Trabzonspor, who have taken four points from their first three league games and were thrashed 5-0 on aggregate by Ferencvaros in their Europa League play-off, need a statement signing. Richarlison wants out. The window is ticking down. Someone will have to blink.

City, Newcastle, Villa line up their next moves

Manchester City, even after landing Enzo Fernandez, are fine-tuning their attack. The Independent reports that Antoine Semenyo has emerged as Enzo Maresca’s preferred option to lead the line whenever Erling Haaland is rested or unavailable. It is a clear sign City are planning specific cover rather than another superstar to crowd Haaland’s space.

Newcastle and Aston Villa are already looking ahead to January. Both clubs are eyeing Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane, according to Football Insider. At 20, he fits the profile for two sides who want to deepen their attacking options without blocking long-term development.

New roles for Coady and Williams, new target for Chelsea

Away from the transfer frenzy, England’s development pathway has added two familiar faces. Conor Coady and Paul Williams will join Lee Carsley’s England U21 coaching staff this autumn after Ashley Cole’s departure.

Coady, the former Wolves and England defender, returns to the national set-up having already worked with the MU19s earlier this year. He brings 10 senior caps and experience from Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. Williams, with his own extensive Premier League background, steps up from England’s U15s and will combine his new role with duties as a senior coach developer at the FA.

The Young Lions, reigning European champions, have three Euro 2027 qualifiers left as they push to book their place at next summer’s finals. Fresh voices on the training pitch arrive at a critical stage of that campaign.

Back at Stamford Bridge, the future is already being costed and calculated. With Enzo gone and Barrios at the top of the list, Chelsea’s next big midfield move looks set to define the second half of their season.
