Trabzonspor Rejects Fatih Tekke's Resignation After Europa League Exit

Trabzonspor have turned down the “emotional” resignation of head coach Fatih Tekke after a bruising Europa League exit, choosing stability over shock in the wake of a heavy defeat.

Tekke offered to walk away on Thursday night after his side were thrashed 4-0 by Ferencvaros in Hungary, a result that sealed a 5-0 aggregate loss in the play-off round and dumped the Super Lig club out of the competition before the league phase.

The reaction was immediate. Less than a year after guiding Trabzonspor to third place in Turkey, the 48-year-old moved to resign. By Friday morning, the club had pushed back, publicly rejecting his decision and attributing it to the “intense emotional impact” of the Europa League elimination rather than any long-term fracture.

So Tekke stays. The European journey, though, changes course.

Dropped from the Europa League, Trabzonspor now fall into the Europa Conference League and will discover their six league-phase opponents on Friday. It is a step down from what the club had envisaged at the start of a summer that carried real ambition.

Transfer Market Ambitions

That ambition was written in the transfer market.

The seven-time Turkish champions have assembled one of the most eye-catching windows in their recent history, landing Premier League title winners Mohamed Salah and Fabinho and bringing Andre Onana back to the club on loan from Manchester United.

Salah’s arrival stunned European football. Now 34, the Egypt forward chose Trabzonspor last month after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract at Liverpool at the end of last season. He left Anfield as a modern legend: the third-highest scorer in Liverpool’s history, with 257 goals in 442 games after joining from Roma in 2017, trailing only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.

His impact in Turkey has already begun. Salah scored his first two goals for his new club in a 2-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Saturday, a glimpse of the firepower Tekke now has at his disposal.

The question is no longer whether Tekke will stay. It is what he can still build with Salah, Fabinho and Onana after a European blow that has tested Trabzonspor’s resolve before the season has truly begun.
