Tottenham's Ambitious Transfer Plans: Savinho and More

Tottenham are already tearing up their own transfer script – and they might not be done yet.

Savinho is in the bag after an £85m agreement with Manchester City, Omar Marmoush is edging closer, and yet the word from inside the market is clear: Spurs could still go even bigger.

Double raid – and then what?

Fabrizio Romano set the tone on Thursday. Tottenham’s plan, he said, is simple enough on paper: two wingers and a central striker this summer. Savinho and Cody Gakpo were identified as the wide options, with a new No 9 to follow.

By the end of the day, the first part of that blueprint was already reality. An £85m deal with City for Savinho, one of Europe’s most coveted young wide forwards, was agreed. Attention then swung quickly to Marmoush, the Eintracht Frankfurt forward who has emerged as the leading candidate for the central striker role.

The Egypt international has agreed personal terms with Spurs on a five-year contract and is understood to be eager to work under Roberto De Zerbi. Talks between the clubs have been described as “very close”, with an agreement expected to be wrapped up in the coming days. If and when that happens, Tottenham’s outlay this summer will be nudging an extraordinary £400m.

And still, the whispers say, there might be more.

“May yet go bigger”

The Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delaney has hinted that Tottenham’s business is not just unfinished, it could be upgraded. Writing in his Inside Football newsletter, Delaney suggested Spurs “may yet go bigger than Savinho and Omar Marmoush”.

The obvious name in that context is Cody Gakpo. Romano has been consistent all window: Savinho, Gakpo and a central striker were the three attacking pillars of Tottenham’s plan. With Savinho agreed and Marmoush now filling the striker brief, Gakpo remains the missing piece.

Spurs have been heavily linked with the Dutch forward throughout the summer, even as the Marmoush story has dominated recent headlines. Romano has stressed that Gakpo’s situation “remains open”, adding: “It’s not over at all, the summer transfer window for Tottenham. I always told you Savinho, Gakpo, and a central striker. Savinho is done. Gakpo: we will talk in the next few days.”

If it is not Gakpo, then Tottenham are clearly prepared to move for another attacking option entirely out of the spotlight. For a club already spending at this level, the idea of a hidden target is no longer far-fetched; it feels like part of a broader, aggressive strategy.

Gakpo, Liverpool and a waiting game

Several hurdles still stand between Tottenham and Gakpo.

Personal terms are not one of them. Gakpo has already agreed those with Spurs and is believed to be very keen on the move. The problem sits at Anfield. Liverpool still see him as part of their plans and have been stubborn in talks, especially after his strong pre-season under new manager Andoni Iraola.

That form has only strengthened Liverpool’s belief that Iraola can extract even more from the 25-year-old. As it stands, Tottenham have not submitted a formal bid. That could change quickly if Liverpool complete deals for Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Either of those arrivals would crowd Gakpo’s area of the pitch and could shift Liverpool’s stance from resistance to negotiation. Until then, Spurs wait, watching the final week of the window for a crack in the door.

The question now is simple: having already pushed their spending towards £400m, will Tottenham still find room – and resolve – to land one more headline act?
