Tottenham's Summer Transfer Dilemma: Key Players Leaving

Tottenham face a pivotal stretch in their summer window, with key players edging towards the exit and squad rules threatening to choke off new arrivals.

Romero edging towards Atletico

Cristian Romero’s future has hovered over Spurs all summer. Now it is moving towards a resolution.

Transfer reporter Matteo Moretto reports that Atletico Madrid are closing in on an agreement with Tottenham for the Argentina international, with only minor details left to iron out between the clubs. Arsenal had been credited with interest earlier in the window, but Atletico have pushed to the front of the queue and are now working to finalise the deal.

If Romero goes, Spurs lose a cornerstone of their defence at a time when Roberto De Zerbi is trying to reshape the squad in his image.

Spence lined up as Dumfries successor

On the continent, another Tottenham defender is climbing to the top of a shopping list.

Italian outlet Corriere claims Djed Spence has become Inter boss Cristian Chivu’s No. 1 priority to replace Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Real Madrid. According to the report, personal terms between Spence and Inter are already agreed, and the two clubs are close to settling on a fee of around £25 million.

For a player who has struggled to establish himself in north London, a move to San Siro would mark a dramatic reset.

Homegrown rules bite into Spurs’ plans

While exits gather pace, Spurs’ attempts to bring players in are running into a familiar wall: the Premier League’s homegrown quota.

Clubs can register a maximum 25-man senior squad, with no more than 17 non-homegrown players. The rest must qualify as homegrown. As things stand, that leaves Tottenham in a tight spot.

Unless they move players out, Spurs can only add signings aged 21 or under without creating registration issues. Anything else risks forcing sales later in the window just to make room.

It is a numbers game as much as a tactical one.

Bergvall at a crossroads

Lucas Bergvall sits right in the middle of that tension between opportunity and congestion.

The 20-year-old has featured regularly in pre-season under De Zerbi, and there is recognition on the player’s side that the new head coach has backed up his praise with minutes. Even so, his future remains open.

Earlier in the summer, Bergvall’s camp informed Spurs of his desire to seek a fresh challenge to accelerate his development. He had grown frustrated last season at a lack of training time, let alone game time, as a number eight. Pre-season has softened that frustration but not erased it. A decision still looms.

Osimhen door closes

Up front, one potential marquee move appears to have slipped away.

TeamTalk reported earlier this week that Spurs had the option to sign Victor Osimhen this summer. That prospect has quickly cooled. Soccernet.ng now reports that the Nigerian striker will remain with Galatasaray beyond the current window.

Osimhen is under contract until June 2029 and has no release clause. The Turkish champions are believed to be planning to hand him the No. 9 shirt and build their attack around the 27-year-old. For Tottenham, that is one elite centre-forward target effectively off the board.

Gakpo only for huge money

Another attacking target looks equally difficult to prise loose.

Tottenham hold an interest in Cody Gakpo, but Liverpool have little intention of letting him go. Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Liverpool do not plan to sell the Dutch forward “as things stand right now,” with the squad already looking light.

Any movement would depend on Liverpool’s own incoming business. Even then, O’Rourke suggested only a huge offer in the region of £70 million or more, combined with new signings at Anfield, could open the door. For now, that door is firmly bolted.

De Zerbi’s wishlist and a restless window

Behind all this, the broader picture at Spurs is clear: De Zerbi wants more firepower and more variety in attack.

Manchester City’s Savinho is a key target. Liverpool’s Gakpo remains admired. City attacker Omar Marmoush is also believed to be on the list. These are ambitious names, but every pursuit is tied to outgoings, registration slots and the willingness of rival clubs to deal.

At the same time, Romero, Spence and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario have all been linked with moves away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, underlining how volatile this window could become.

Another day, another swirl of possibilities. With the clock ticking and the homegrown rules tightening around them, Spurs have little choice now: make the right sacrifices, or watch their transfer plans unravel.
