Tottenham Signs Omar Marmoush in £300m Rebuild

Tottenham Hotspur have reached a full agreement with Manchester City to sign Omar Marmoush on an initial loan that will turn into a big-money permanent move, according to The Athletic.

The 27-year-old Egypt international joins on a season-long loan with a mandatory purchase clause set at a fixed £50 million, plus a further £10m in potential add-ons. Half of those bonuses are described as easily achievable. Marmoush will sign a four-year contract in north London with an option for an extra 12 months, and there is no sell-on clause owed to Eintracht Frankfurt, his former club.

From Etihad frustration to Spurs rebuild

A departure from the Etihad had been looming for Marmoush after a frustrating spell of limited minutes, despite only arriving at City in January 2025. He showed flashes, but never truly nailed down a starting spot.

Now he becomes part of a sweeping rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi. His arrival follows Spurs’ £85m capture of Brazilian winger Savinho, a long-running pursuit finally completed after interest stretching back to last year. The message is clear: Tottenham are spending their way out of trouble.

Marmoush scored eight goals in 36 appearances in all competitions last season. In the league, though, he started just eight times and came off the bench on 13 occasions, a pattern that underlined his slide down the pecking order.

City had initially committed up to €75m (£63m) to prise him from Frankfurt after a blistering run of 20 goals in 26 games in the first half of the 2024-25 campaign. He began life in Manchester with promise too, returning seven goals in his first 16 outings. Then the minutes dried up. His last competitive appearance came as a substitute for Erling Haaland in the 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on August 16.

Spurs’ spending surges past £300m

The Marmoush deal pushes Tottenham’s summer outlay comfortably beyond the £300m mark. He joins Savinho, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke as major arrivals, with Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka also coming in on free transfers.

This is not tinkering. It is a reset.

De Zerbi and his staff see Marmoush as a key piece in that overhaul. His ability to operate across the frontline offers the kind of tactical flexibility they believe is essential for a packed schedule and a squad that has looked short of ideas in the final third.

Tottenham head into the new season desperate to shake off the malaise of back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. The frontline has to be revitalised, and quickly.

Marmoush will now undergo his medical in London before finalising the last details of the move ahead of the transfer deadline. Spurs are betting that a forward who once tore through the Bundesliga and briefly lit up Manchester can rediscover that edge in north London.

If he does, this won’t just be another expensive name on a long list. It could be the signing that finally drags Tottenham out of survival mode and back into the fight.
