Tottenham's New Hope: Savio Joins De Zerbi's Ambitious Squad

Tottenham staggered through last season, clinging to their Premier League status on the final day, a year after lifting the Europa League. Gordon Strachan does not see that horror show being repeated.

The former Scotland manager believes Roberto De Zerbi’s edge – and his temper – will drag Spurs away from the bottom and back towards the sharp end of the table.

“I can’t see Spurs doing that again, I really can’t,” Strachan told Betway, pointing to the club’s heavy summer spending and the Italian on the touchline. “Not after spending that type of money, and not with the manager they’ve got, who's permanently angry – which is good.

“It’s like Sir Alex, he was permanently angry, as long as he’s got that drive to scare people into winning games of football and not getting beat.

“When I played with Sir Alex, it was not the fact that you had to win, you were just so scared of getting beat. So I think that’s what De Zerbi does to these teams a little bit.”

The message is clear: fear can be a weapon. De Zerbi intends to use it.

Savio arrives to light up the attack

Into that environment walks Savio, Tottenham’s latest and loudest statement of intent.

The Brazilian winger has joined for an initial £75 million, with a further £10m in add-ons, a fee that underlines just how determined Spurs are to erase the memory of last season’s collapse. Supporters have responded instantly, flooding the club’s social media channels with excitement.

“Welcome lad we’ve been waiting for you. Time to build a legacy here in Spurs and the Premier League,” wrote one fan, capturing the mood.

“Another went further, stitching together the winger’s rapid rise: “From shining at Girona to learning under Pep, and now cooked up by Roberto De Zerbi? Absolute masterclass signing. Savio is going to transform this attack entirely. Premier League isn’t ready for this flair!”

The expectation is sky-high. So is the price tag. De Zerbi now has a wide forward built for his aggressive, front-foot football.

Registered in time – and racing the clock

The timing has been tight. Tottenham confirmed Savio’s signing on Wednesday and moved quickly to ensure he could be registered before the midday deadline, making him eligible to feature in the Carabao Cup tie against Championship side Charlton Athletic.

He can play. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he is at De Zerbi’s disposal.

Not every deal is moving so cleanly. Spurs remain in talks with Manchester City over Marmoush, but there is still no agreement. The window is ticking down, and while Savio is in the building, other targets remain stuck in negotiation.

Lange: “On our radar for a while”

Inside the club, there is little doubt about how long they have chased their new winger.

“Savio is someone who has been on our radar for a while and I’m delighted that he is now a Tottenham Hotspur player,” said sporting director Johan Lange.

“He has already shown his quality at the highest level, and we believe his ability, style and mentality will be a great fit for the squad we are building here.

“I know he will excite our supporters every time he gets on the ball and I’m looking forward to watching his development under Roberto’s coaching.”

That last line matters. Spurs are not just buying a finished product; they are betting on De Zerbi’s capacity to sharpen him further.

“One of the best managers in the world”

Savio, or Savinho as he was known at Manchester City, has been just as effusive about the move and the man he is joining.

“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” the 22-year-old said after the transfer was confirmed. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.

“As soon as I spoke to the Head Coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level, and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”

For a player who has already impressed at Girona and worked under Pep Guardiola’s umbrella, that is a serious endorsement of De Zerbi’s pull.

Back to ‘Savio’ and into Romero’s old shirt

There is symbolism in the details too.

Savio has taken the No. 17 shirt at Tottenham, recently vacated by Cristian Romero after the defender’s move to Atletico Madrid. It is a fresh start in a familiar number.

He has also reverted to the name that first caught Europe’s eye. At Girona, he wore ‘Savio’ on the back of his shirt. At City and on his Brazil debut, he went by ‘Savinho’. In north London, he has gone back to ‘Savio’ – back to the identity that launched his rise.

The price tag, the shirt number, the name. All of it points to a player ready to step out of the shadows and own the stage.

De Zerbi’s kind of winger

De Zerbi has wasted no time outlining exactly why he wanted him.

“Sávio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions,” the Tottenham head coach said. “He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity.

“We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

Courage. Imagination. Personality. They are the traits De Zerbi demands from his forwards. They are also the qualities that were so badly missing as Spurs slid towards the trapdoor last season.

Now the club have a manager Strachan compares to Sir Alex Ferguson for his relentless anger and standards, and a winger signed to electrify a flat attack.

Tottenham have spent heavily, armed De Zerbi with flair and fear, and drawn a line under a season that nearly ended in disaster. The question now is not whether they will survive – it is how far this volatile, ambitious mix can actually take them.
