Tottenham Land £85m Savio from Man City

Tottenham have finally got their man. Savio, the long-term target who slipped away last summer, is now a Spurs player in a deal worth up to £85m from Manchester City.

The 22-year-old winger joins for an initial £75m, with a further £10m in add-ons. At least £5m of those bonuses are viewed as virtually guaranteed, meaning City are set to bank a minimum of £80m. It is a club-record sale for City, eclipsing Julián Álvarez’s £82m move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Savio, previously registered as Savinho at City, will wear the No 17 shirt in north London.

“One of the best managers in the world”

The Brazilian arrives talking like a man who knows exactly why he has chosen Tottenham.

“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” Savio said in a statement released by the club. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.

“As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level, and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”

Roberto De Zerbi, the man at the centre of this new Spurs project, was equally clear about what he expects.

“Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions,” the Spurs boss said. “He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity.

“We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

Spurs’ summer explodes past £300m

Savio’s arrival pushes Tottenham’s summer outlay through the £300m mark. The club had already committed a combined £237m on Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, while Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arrived on free transfers.

According to Sky Sports data, Spurs have now overspent on transfer fees by nearly £130m in this window when compared to player valuations on Transfermarkt. Even when the free signings of Robertson, Senesi and Martin Dubravka are factored in, the overspend still stands at £101.7m.

Savio himself is the headline figure in that calculation. Tottenham are judged to have paid around £55m over his estimated value, making him the single most “overpaid for” player of the window by that metric. The top three overspend deals are all Spurs signings: Tonali, Fernandes and Savio.

It is a bold, expensive bet on upside and attacking flair.

Marmoush talks continue as City weigh options

The Savio deal does not close Tottenham’s business with Manchester City.

Sky Sports News reported that Spurs are very close to finalising a move for Omar Marmoush, with advanced negotiations “ongoing and progressing in the right direction” and the forward understood to be on board with the transfer.

City, though, are suddenly light in attacking areas. Head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed an injury for Jeremy Doku, and with Savio now gone for £85m, his forward line looks thin.

Marmoush was an unused substitute in City’s 2-1 Premier League opening win at Bournemouth, having featured off the bench for 37 minutes in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. His future now sits at the intersection of City’s need for depth and Spurs’ determination to keep reshaping their attack.

Tottenham have thrown money, faith and a prime shirt number at Savio. The fee is huge, the expectations even bigger. If De Zerbi turns that gamble into a statement, this could be the signing that defines Spurs’ new era.
