Thomas Tuchel on Trent Alexander-Arnold's England Recall

Thomas Tuchel has admitted he may not have treated Trent Alexander-Arnold entirely fairly during the defender’s long exile from the England squad – but insists he would make the same ruthless calls again if the team is “flying” in future.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the England head coach reflected on the sequence of decisions that left Alexander-Arnold watching the World Cup from home. Since Tuchel’s appointment in October 2024, the Real Madrid full-back had managed just 26 minutes of international football – a late substitute outing against Andorra – before this latest recall.

“Was it always fair? Maybe not from my side,” Tuchel admitted. “But if you remember, the next camp was September.”

That gap proved decisive. England gathered momentum, results followed, and Alexander-Arnold slipped further from the picture. Tuchel leaned heavily on the players who had carried England through those early camps, and once the group clicked, he refused to break the rhythm.

“We were suddenly flying and we stuck to the same squad in October and that was it for him,” Tuchel said. “There was never a chance for him to come back whether that was [fair] or not. I just trusted the guys who were in camp.”

The message was blunt: international football is not sentimental. Alexander-Arnold’s World Cup omission was collateral damage from a manager determined not to disturb a winning formula.

What has changed now is not Tuchel’s philosophy, but Alexander-Arnold’s form. The 25-year-old has forced his way back into contention with three starts for Real Madrid this season under Jose Mourinho, rediscovering the sharpness and authority that once made him a guaranteed England pick. That surge at club level has finally translated into another opportunity with the national team.

Tuchel, though, is adamant that a call-up is only the start of the battle.

“You don’t come to relax. You don’t come to take a break,” he said, laying down a clear challenge not just to Alexander-Arnold but to every player reporting for duty. “You come to perform and it’s difficult to perform for England and the guys who perform now have our trust. And the guys who come new into camp, we demand the highest of them. It includes Trent but it’s not exclusively for him. It’s for everyone who comes to our camps.”

No comfort zones. No reputations banked. Not even for a Champions League winner.

Alexander-Arnold now has to turn that warning into fuel. The Nations League offers him a narrow window to convince Tuchel he belongs in the core group, not on the fringes. England face world champions Spain on Saturday in a fixture that will expose any defensive frailty, before a tricky trip to Czechia.

Training will be the first audition. The pitch, the final verdict.

If Alexander-Arnold can transfer his Real Madrid form onto this stage, the debate over his place under Tuchel may finally end. If he cannot, this recall could feel less like a new chapter and more like a brief pause in a story of what might have been.
