St Johnstone Sign Midfielder Joel Cotterill from Swansea City

St Johnstone have moved to strengthen their midfield, sealing the signing of Joel Cotterill from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has agreed a one-year deal that keeps him in Perth until the summer of 2027, a clear sign the club see him as more than a short-term fix.

Cotterill arrives with a solid grounding. Raised in Swansea’s academy, he broke into the senior set-up in 2022 before being sent out to learn the hard way in England’s lower leagues. Spells at Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers gave him a taste of different styles, different pressures, different expectations.

The real audition for this move, though, came last season.

Cotterill spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Dundee, staying in the Scottish Premiership and getting a close-up look at the environment he is now joining permanently. He made 11 league appearances and found the net once, enough to convince St Johnstone that he could handle the pace and physical edge of the division.

He has done his homework on his new club as well.

"I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club," Cotterill told club media, outlining how quickly the move gathered pace. He then tuned in to watch St Johnstone’s clash with Dundee on Wednesday night, using it as a live scouting mission on his future team-mates and the style he is stepping into.

What he saw suited him.

"Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball."

That description fits the profile of a modern Premiership midfielder: comfortable taking the ball under pressure, willing to break lines, brave enough to carry play up the pitch rather than simply recycle it.

His series of loans has already toughened him up.

"I've had different challenges out on loan. I think I've adapted previously and I've already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership," he said, pointing to the variety of experiences that have shaped him before his 22nd birthday.

He knows exactly what awaits.

"It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I'll make sure I'm ready for it and up for the challenge."

St Johnstone now have a young midfielder who wants the ball, wants responsibility and already understands the intensity of the league. How quickly he turns that into influence will help define their season.
