Shrewsbury Town Signs Leicester's Michael Golding on Loan

Shrewsbury Town have moved to plug their midfield gap by bringing in Leicester City youngster Michael Golding on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old arrives with a reputation as a technically sharp, forward-thinking midfielder, but also as a player in need of minutes after a stop-start beginning to his senior career.

Raised in the academy system at Chelsea, Golding came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and finally touched first-team football in January 2024, stepping off the bench in an FA Cup tie for his only senior appearance for the Blues. It was a glimpse rather than a breakthrough.

That summer, Leicester pounced. The Foxes paid around £4m for the England youth international and tied him down to what was described as a “long-term contract”, betting on his potential as they reshaped their squad. Golding had to wait for his chance, though, making his Leicester debut only at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, as City slid out of the Premier League.

Now comes a different kind of pressure. League One, a club rebuilding, and a manager who clearly wants him.

Golding becomes Shrewsbury’s ninth signing of the current window, drafted in to ease the loss of Jack Price, sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring problem. Price’s absence left a hole in the middle of the pitch; Golding has been brought in to help fill it.

“We’re really excited and appreciative of Leicester, how they have accommodated the move,” head coach Gavin Cowan told BBC Radio Shropshire. “He’s been on our radar for a while. He’s a young guy who wants to reignite his career and will be a really good addition.”

A player looking to restart, a club looking to climb. The fit is obvious. If Golding can translate academy promise into senior authority, Shrewsbury gain a midfielder who can set the tempo and punch passes through the lines. If not, it becomes just another short-term loan. The stakes are clear for both sides.

And the business might not be done.

BBC Radio Shropshire report that Town are also close to securing a loan deal for young Burnley striker Kian McMahon-Brown. Last season’s academy player of the year at Turf Moor, McMahon-Brown signed a two-year contract extension in the summer, a signal of how highly Burnley rate him. Behind the scenes, there is a familiar link too: former Shrewsbury chief executive Matt Williams is now Burnley’s chief operating officer.

Golding through the door, McMahon-Brown potentially next. Shrewsbury’s squad is changing shape fast. The question now is simple: can these hungry prospects turn potential into points when the season tightens and the pressure bites?
