Serie A Weekend: Inter, Roma, Juve, and Milan's Historic Pursuits

Inter step into their clash with Napoli with a piece of history within reach. They have scored in each of the last 16 Serie A meetings between the sides. One more game with at least a single Inter goal, and Opta confirm they will set an outright record: no team has ever found the net in 17 consecutive league matches against Napoli.

It is not just about the streak. A win would also give Inter their first three‑match winning start to a season since 2023-2024, backing up the maximum points they have already banked from the opening two rounds.

At the heart of it all stands Hakan Calhanoglu. The midfielder has scored in both of Inter’s first two games. If he strikes again on Saturday, he will become the first midfielder in the club’s history to score in each of the opening three fixtures of a single Serie A campaign. One more clean strike, and his name goes straight into the club’s statistical folklore.

Napoli arrive with their own run to protect. They are unbeaten in five straight league meetings with Inter, a sequence of one win and four draws. Stretch that to six without defeat and they will match a level they have not hit since a spell between 2013 and 2015.

Inter still carry the broader weight of the rivalry. Across Serie A meetings, they lead with 70 wins, 48 defeats and 42 draws, and have scored 229 goals against Napoli. Only Juventus have managed more.

Roma’s storming start meets their bogey side

Roma have come out swinging. Two games, two 4-0 wins, and a place in the record books. They are now one of only three teams in Serie A history to score at least eight goals without conceding across their first two rounds.

The temptation is obvious. Juventus in 1983-1984 were the last side to reach nine goals or more without conceding in their first three matches. If Roma keep the floodgates open at one end and locked at the other, they will stand on the brink of matching that feat.

Then comes Atalanta. And this is where the story darkens for the Giallorossi.

Atalanta have gone eight league meetings without losing to Roma, winning six and drawing two. It is the longest such run either side has ever put together in this fixture. The capital offers little comfort: Roma have taken just one win from their last 12 home league games against Atalanta, with six draws and five defeats.

So the form book collides with the history book.

Atalanta are chasing a landmark of their own. Victory at the Olimpico would give them three wins from three to start a Serie A season for the first time since 2020-2021. Donyell Malen is the headline act: 19 goals in his first 20 Serie A matches. Only Gunnar Nordahl and José Altafini have done better at this stage, both hitting 20 in their first 20 appearances.

Lazar Samardzic brings a quieter, but remarkable, streak. He has scored in each of his last six Serie A seasons. If he adds an assist against Roma, he will become the youngest player since 2004-2005 to both score and assist in six different campaigns. Another small line in the record books, but a telling one.

Juve–Milan: a giant fixture frozen by clean sheets

Juventus versus Milan usually screams goals and tension. Recently, it has delivered something very different: silence on the scoreboard.

Four of the last five league meetings between the two have finished 0-0, including the last two. This fixture has never before produced three consecutive goalless draws. The only comparable run of stalemates between the clubs dates back to 1973-1974, when they shared four draws in a row.

Juventus, though, can point to a defensive record that borders on the absurd. They have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six meetings with Milan. No other opponent has ever held the Rossoneri scoreless for so many consecutive Serie A games.

That streak feeds into their present. Juve opened the season with 1-0 and 2-0 wins. Another game without conceding would give them clean sheets in their first three fixtures for only the second time in the last 10 campaigns.

Milan come at this from a different angle. They can make it three straight wins to start a season for the fourth time in the last seven. And they know where danger lurks when they travel elsewhere: Nico Gonzalez has enjoyed facing them at home, with a goal and two assists across his last four home matches against Milan.

Something has to give. Either the clean-sheet wall cracks, or the goalless pattern stretches into unprecedented territory.

Lazio’s perfect start tested by stubborn Udinese

Two games, two wins, both by two goals, both with clean sheets. Lazio have never opened a Serie A season like this.

Now they chase a third straight victory to start a campaign, something they have managed only twice before: in 1974-1975 and 2012-2013. The numbers whisper of a special season, but Udinese stand squarely in the way.

Recent history leans towards the visitors. Udinese have avoided defeat in eight of their last 10 meetings with Lazio. And they relish this trip: just one defeat in their last 13 visits, with eight wins and four draws.

Lazio’s form says one thing. The fixture’s history says another.

Dovikas hunting Osimhen’s away-day mark

Down at Genoa versus Como, a quieter subplot carries its own edge. Tsous Dovikas has scored in five consecutive Serie A away games. One more, and he will match Victor Osimhen’s run of six straight away matches with a goal from 2023, a streak the former Napoli star put together before his move to Galatasaray.

It is the kind of record that slips under the radar on a weekend dominated by giants. But for a striker on the rise, drawing level with a benchmark set by Osimhen would be a statement of its own.
