Santiago Bueno Joins Club América on Loan from Wolves

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves stint has been put on pause – and revived 5,000 miles away.

The Uruguay centre-back has left Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan for the rest of the season, sealing a move to Mexican giants Club América, who sit top of the Liga MX table. The deal includes an option to buy.

It is a sharp change of direction for a player Wolves committed to heavily only a year ago. Bueno arrived from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract, billed as a defender entering his peak years at 27 and already hardened by La Liga and international football.

He quickly became a regular. Across three Premier League seasons he clocked up 70 appearances, anchoring the back line through managerial changes and shifting tactical plans. Last September brought a personal landmark: his first goal for Wolves, a crucial strike in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham that underlined his growing presence in the side.

He featured 29 times in the league last term, but the campaign ended in brutal fashion as Wolves’ eight-year stay in the Premier League was cut short with relegation to the Championship. The reset that followed has now pushed him out of the immediate picture.

Bueno did not play at the start of this season and was left out when Wolves finalised their 25-man squad. That decision opened the door to a late move, with the Mexican window still active.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” technical director Matt Jackson told the club’s website. The numbers game ultimately caught up with the defender. “We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline, and when we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out.”

For Club América, it is a chance to add a seasoned, international centre-back to a title-chasing squad. For Bueno, it is a fresh stage and a clean run of minutes at the top end of another fiercely demanding league.

Wolves, meanwhile, will watch from a distance, knowing a strong season in Mexico could turn this loan into a permanent goodbye.
