Ronald Araujo’s Future at Liverpool: Deco Weighs In

Ronald Araujo has barely unpacked on Merseyside, but his future is already being weighed up in two cities.

On the pitch, the Uruguayan has slotted in quickly at Liverpool. Out of position? Technically, yes. Effective? Undeniably. Andoni Iraola has pushed him wide, leaning on his defensive instincts to lock down the flank and give Liverpool a level of security they have badly needed.

That versatility is exactly why Liverpool were prepared to use up a valuable foreign player slot to bring him in. Araujo offers top-level cover at both right-back and centre-back, two areas that have caused headaches for this squad in recent seasons. He’s not a luxury signing. He’s a structural piece.

But he isn’t theirs. Not yet.

Araujo is on loan from Barcelona, and the deal comes with a €50m buy option. Liverpool can turn the arrangement into a permanent transfer, though that decision sits parked in the future, likely next summer. For now, every game he plays at Anfield is also a scouting report for the Camp Nou.

Barcelona are watching. Closely.

Deco’s verdict

Sporting director Deco made that clear when he spoke to Sport this week.

"I watched the Liverpool match yesterday," he said. "I love him. I'm fond of him and want him to succeed. Personally, I love him. At times, he hasn't been able to play at his usual level.

"His time at Barca was spectacular. Sometimes, ideas don't align. He is under contract with us; it's still early days."

That last line matters. Araujo remains a Barcelona player. The Catalan club have already enjoyed a “spectacular” spell from him, as Deco put it, but there’s no hiding the fact his level dipped over the last couple of seasons. System changes, tactical tweaks, confidence – call it what you like, he stalled.

Liverpool believe they can reverse that slide. Quickly.

If they’re right, both clubs stand to gain. Iraola gets a defender operating back at his peak, while Barcelona either welcome home a revitalised centre-back or cash in for €50m. For them, Araujo’s resurgence in the Premier League would be as valuable on the balance sheet as it is on the pitch.

The early signs are positive. Araujo looks physically sharp, tactically disciplined and increasingly at ease in a role that isn’t his natural home. Liverpool’s gamble on his adaptability is paying off in the short term.

The long-term call is far more complex. Do Liverpool commit €50m to a player who has started well but is still adjusting? Do Barcelona really want to let go of a defender Deco openly says he loves?

This is shaping up to be one of the defining subplots of Liverpool’s season. The performances are here and now. The decision lands in the summer.
