Romelu Lukaku Leaves Napoli for Fenerbahce

Romelu Lukaku’s turbulent Napoli chapter is over. His next stop: Istanbul.

The veteran striker is leaving the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in a deal worth a reported €6m plus performance-related add-ons, a modest fee that underlines how decisively Napoli have redrawn their attacking pecking order. The club had already moved on in football terms earlier in the summer, when they pushed through the permanent signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United for €44m (£38m).

That move changed everything. With Hojlund installed as the long-term No 9, Napoli could finally cut ties with Lukaku’s sizeable wages and lean fully into a younger, more dynamic frontline. His sale is less about reputation and more about direction.

It also closes the book on a strained final act in Italy. Lukaku’s fitness had become a recurring problem, limiting his impact and testing patience behind the scenes. Tension spiked last spring when he undertook an unapproved training stint in Belgium, prompting warnings of disciplinary action from sporting director Giovanni Manna. From that moment, the path to the exit door felt inevitable. Turkey opened it.

A new spearhead for Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce are not just picking up a big name; they are building a new core around him. Lukaku arrives as the focal point of an aggressive rebuild aimed at dragging the club back to the summit of Turkish football.

The recruitment drive has been relentless. Nathan Ake has come in from Manchester City to anchor the defence. Mason Greenwood has joined from Marseille to add cutting edge and unpredictability in the final third. Vedat Muriqi returns on the back of a 23-goal La Liga season with Real Mallorca, offering another powerful presence up front.

Drop Lukaku into that mix and Fenerbahce suddenly look heavy with experience, goals and personality. Istanbul has seen star projects before. This one feels deliberately constructed around proven output.

For Lukaku, the move offers something he has badly needed: a clean slate.

Last season with Napoli never really caught fire for him. Lingering injuries restricted him to just seven club appearances, a frustratingly thin return for a striker of his stature. Yet the international stage told a different story. He featured in all six of Belgium’s matches at this summer’s World Cup, scoring three times as they reached the quarter-finals and proving that, when his body cooperates, the penalty-box instincts remain intact.

Life after Conte

This transfer also arrives in the wake of another significant departure from Naples: Antonio Conte. Few coaches have understood and maximised Lukaku quite like him, across three different clubs and several defining seasons.

Their reunion at Napoli was brief but brutally effective. Together they delivered the 2024-25 Serie A title, with Lukaku hitting 14 league goals as the Partenopei reclaimed the Scudetto. Then, just as quickly as they had reassembled, both men moved on.

Their bond had been forged years earlier at Inter. Under Conte at San Siro, Lukaku produced the most explosive spell of his career, rattling in 34 goals in one season and 30 in the next. Those campaigns powered Inter to a Europa League final and the 2020-21 Serie A crown, and eventually convinced Chelsea to spend £97.5m to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.

That second Chelsea stint lasted only a year. From there, Lukaku’s career turned nomadic: a loan back to Inter that culminated in a run to the 2022-23 Champions League final, a subsequent spell at Roma, and finally a permanent move to Napoli in 2024.

Now comes another pin on the map. Another challenge. Another league.

Lukaku’s switch to Fenerbahce adds Turkey to a journey that has already taken him through some of Europe’s most demanding clubs, with highs and lows in equal measure. The question now is simple and stark: in Istanbul, does he have one more dominant chapter left in him?
