Romelu Lukaku Joins Fenerbahce for Title Challenge

Romelu Lukaku is heading to Istanbul. Fenerbahce confirmed on Wednesday that the former Manchester United and Chelsea striker has signed for the club, landing one of the biggest centre-forwards of his generation as they chase a long-awaited league title.

The Turkish side did not disclose the length of the 33-year-old Belgian’s contract or the transfer fee, but they wasted no time putting him in front of the fans. In a video message on social media, Lukaku addressed his new supporters directly.

"It's an honour and a privilege to be joining your club and to join this club," he said. "I'm fit, 100 percent, ready to go."

For Fenerbahce, this is a statement. For Lukaku, it is another sharp turn in a career that has mixed prolific goalscoring with frustrating injuries and turbulence behind the scenes.

Belgium’s record marksman — 93 goals for his country — arrives in Turkey after a bruising spell at Napoli. He joined the Italian side in the summer of 2024 and helped deliver the Scudetto in his debut season, but the joy did not last. An injury, followed by a breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy, left him on the margins last season, restricted to just 64 minutes of league football.

Even so, Belgium still trusted him on the biggest stage. Lukaku made the 2026 World Cup squad and responded with three goals, driving his country to the quarter-finals before they fell to eventual champions Spain.

Now comes a fresh challenge on the Bosphorus. Fenerbahce have built one of the most eye-catching attacks in Europe and Lukaku’s arrival only sharpens that edge. The club had already moved for another former Manchester United player, winger Mason Greenwood, adding pace and invention on the flank. With Lukaku through the middle, the attacking options look formidable.

The need is obvious. Fenerbahce have watched Galatasaray celebrate title after title, finishing runners-up to their fiercest rivals in each of the last four seasons. Their last Turkish Super Lig crown came in 2014, an eternity for a club of their size and expectation.

Lukaku has been signed to change that story. The question now is simple: can his goals finally drag Fenerbahce back to the top of Turkish football?
