Rodri Joins Barcelona from Manchester City for £65m
Barcelona have landed one of the game’s elite midfielders, confirming the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has signed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, taking him back to Spanish football for the first time since leaving Atletico Madrid in 2019. At 30, he arrives as the finished article, not a project.
Seven seasons at City end with a bulging medal collection and a legacy. Rodri made 298 appearances and collected 12 major trophies: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and the 2023 Champions League. He became the metronome of Pep Guardiola’s side, the player City rarely functioned without.
The story could have tailed off. Injuries disrupted his final two campaigns in Manchester, slowing his rhythm and opening the door for doubts. Instead, he roared back on the biggest stage of all. This summer’s World Cup restored his aura, as he drove Spain to their second title and walked away as player of the tournament.
His farewell to City carried the weight of those years.
"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories," Rodri said in a message to supporters. "What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.
"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."
City had hoped the story would continue. Rodri was entering the final 12 months of the contract he signed in 2022, and the Premier League champions tried to tie him down again. Talks stalled. No agreement, no extension. The clock started ticking.
For a long stretch, the smart money pointed towards Real Madrid. They looked best placed to move, and the idea was not alien to Rodri. Speaking to Spanish radio in March about the possibility of joining the European champions, the former Atletico midfielder was candid.
"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said.
The path never opened. Real Madrid cooled their interest and stepped away. That left space. Barcelona moved into it.
Sources told BBC Sport that Barcelona had Rodri’s approval to open negotiations with City. Their first offer, around £38.5m, was knocked back. City, under no illusion about his value even with a year left on his deal, stood firm.
The pressure finally told. Talks pushed the fee well beyond that initial proposal and an agreement was struck in the region of £65m, a statement outlay for a club still juggling financial constraints.
On Monday, Rodri touched down in Barcelona. At the airport, surrounded by cameras and microphones, he kept it simple. Playing for the Catalan side, he said, is a "dream".
From Manchester’s rain to the Nou Camp’s glare, from the anchor of City’s era to the heartbeat of Barcelona’s rebuild – Rodri now carries the weight of another giant on his shoulders.
