Roberto De Zerbi's Selection Dilemmas Ahead of Tottenham vs Newcastle

Roberto De Zerbi walks into his first Premier League home game as Tottenham head coach with something managers secretly love: real selection headaches.

Spurs host Newcastle United on Saturday, back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time in the league since that high‑pressure final-day win over Everton that kept them in the top flight. The stakes are different now, but the tension around his first proper home line-up is just as sharp.

New boys, new dilemmas

Two fresh faces from Manchester City have changed the landscape of De Zerbi’s attack. Savio is already pushing hard for a starting spot, while Omar Marmoush is in contention after completing his initial loan move.

Both were heavily involved in City’s pre-season, so fitness should not be a major barrier. If De Zerbi wants to make a statement and inject immediate pace and unpredictability, he has the option to throw one – or both – straight into the XI.

That attacking call becomes even more intriguing after Wednesday night.

Cup confidence to carry over

Spurs finally clicked in front of their own fans in midweek, dismantling Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the Carabao Cup. It was their first victory of the season at home and the kind of performance that can shift a mood around a club.

De Zerbi will want that swagger to spill into the league. The question is how much of that cup side he trusts to go again against far tougher opposition.

Dominic Solanke certainly did his part. The striker found the net against Charlton and has strengthened his claim to keep his place, especially with Richarlison struggling badly in the defeat at Brentford. Mohammed Kudus is back in full training and could return to the bench, giving De Zerbi another weapon if the game opens up late on.

Up front, everything hinges on how quickly Marmoush and Savio are deemed ready to start. If they are, the entire shape of the front line could change.

Defensive calls at the back

At the other end, the back four is far from settled.

Pedro Porro, a World Cup winner, got half an hour under his belt on Wednesday and will be desperate to start at right-back. His attacking thrust suits De Zerbi’s style, and with minutes now in his legs, the timing feels right.

Micky van de Ven also played 30 minutes in midweek, but the Dutch defender has had fewer minutes overall this summer. That could see him used from the bench again, with De Zerbi wary of pushing him too quickly.

On the left, Destiny Udogie impressed with a strong display against Charlton. Even so, his workload may be managed carefully, which opens the door for Andy Robertson to come into the starting line-up and offer experience and balance on that flank.

Midfield balance the key

The middle of the pitch might be where De Zerbi makes his boldest call.

Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur have the profile to dominate games together: control, bite, and the range of passing to feed a more advanced creator. De Zerbi could pair them as a double pivot, with Mateus Fernandes pushed slightly ahead to link midfield and attack.

That potential trio looks even more likely after recent performances. Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall have not done enough in recent outings to nail down starting roles, which leaves the door wide open for a reshaped, more authoritative midfield.

If De Zerbi goes that way, Spurs suddenly look a lot more secure through the spine.

The XI taking shape

Put all of that together and a picture emerges: a Spurs side still under construction, but with far more options than just a few weeks ago.

Porro pushing to start. Robertson ready on the left. Tonali and Bentancur poised to anchor the centre. Fernandes offering the creative spark. Solanke fighting to keep his place while Marmoush and Savio wait to see if their Tottenham story begins from the first whistle or from the bench.

For the first time this season, De Zerbi is picking from strength rather than necessity. How bold he chooses to be against Newcastle will say plenty about the kind of Tottenham he wants to build.
