Liverpool’s 18-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha has been firmly on Arsenal’s radar, with the Premier League champions weighing up a move as they look to reshape their left flank after Gabriel Martinelli’s departure.

The London club never found a direct replacement in the summer window. David Ornstein has already hinted that something “could” happen in January in that area of the pitch, and Ngumoha’s name has hovered near the top of the list.

But the noise coming out of Merseyside is getting louder – and it’s all pointing one way.

TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle on a lucrative new contract at Anfield. Those talks have now moved into the final stretch, with both sides working to turn that framework into a binding deal.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports no major obstacles on the horizon for Liverpool. The club want him tied down. The player is happy. The pathway is clear.

“Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha, and the player himself, I understand, is happy at Liverpool as well and is set to get regular starts this season,” O’Rourke explained, underlining the club’s confidence that his long-term future lies at Anfield.

When a teenager is promised real minutes for the champions, the pull is obvious.

Arsenal’s situation only fuels the speculation. They allowed Martinelli to leave, moved Leandro Trossard on and brought in Christos Tzolis, but never secured the marquee wide forward many expected.

That vacuum naturally dragged Ngumoha’s name into the conversation. A gifted left-sided attacker, already regarded as one of the standout talents of his age group, fits exactly the profile Arsenal have been chasing.

Yet Liverpool have never wavered.

Fabrizio Romano, who has tracked the winger’s situation closely, has repeatedly stressed that Liverpool’s stance has been firm from the summer onwards. Bayern Munich and other clubs circled, but the answer from Anfield did not change: Ngumoha was not for sale.

“The player is not leaving, the player is not for sale and Liverpool trust Rio. Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano reported. There was no formal negotiation, no serious talks, just a clear message that the door was shut.

Now, as Arsenal’s need grows, that message is being reinforced with a contract offer.

Europe will keep calling

Romano expects the interest to keep coming. Arsenal will not be alone. Big clubs across the continent are already tracking Ngumoha and will continue to test Liverpool’s resolve in the years ahead.

“If there is a chance to sign Rio Ngumoha in 2027, 2028 or whenever, for sure Arsenal would be among the clubs interested. And not only Arsenal. I am sure there will also be clubs from abroad,” he said.

For now, though, the equation is simple. Liverpool want to keep him. Talks over a new deal are active. Both sides are optimistic about ironing out the final details, from financial terms to guarantees over his role.

There is still a contract to sign and promises to formalise, but the direction of travel is clear.
