Richarlison's Contract Standoff with Tottenham: A Push for Vasco Escape

Richarlison’s summer has turned into a saga. Tottenham Hotspur have tried to move him on, the Brazilian has tried to engineer his own exit, and yet, as the clock ticks down in Brazil, he remains a Spurs player with no clear way out.

What he wants is simple enough: a return to Vasco da Gama. What stands in the way is a nine‑month contract stand-off with a club in no mood to let him walk for free.

A transfer window of near-misses

It collapsed. Richarlison couldn’t agree terms with Everton, the move died, and with it Spurs’ route to Ndiaye. The forward instead ended up at Manchester City, while Roberto De Zerbi’s side pivoted and took Mykhaylo Mudryk from Chelsea on loan with an option to buy.

That failed switch didn’t just shape Richarlison’s future. It reshaped Tottenham’s attacking plans and left the Brazilian in limbo.

He then saw another door close. A proposed move to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig failed to materialise, leaving Vasco da Gama as his main escape route.

Race against Brazil’s deadline

In Brazil, the window shuts on Friday night. That deadline has turned Richarlison’s situation into a sprint.

Reports on Thursday suggested the 29-year-old had already agreed terms with Vasco and was now pushing to have his Spurs contract cancelled to ease the move. A clean break, no fee, just a fresh start back home.

Tottenham have other ideas.

BBC Sport revealed on Thursday evening that Richarlison and the club are “in dispute over the remaining nine months of his contract”. The forward is “exploring his options” and is “keen to be released from his deal”, but Spurs have effectively slammed that door shut.

The club hold a 12‑month option to extend his contract through to the end of next season, a clause that strengthens their hand and weakens any hope of a free release. According to the report, Tottenham are not entertaining the prospect of letting him go for nothing and are unwilling to negotiate a settlement on the remainder of his deal.

So the stalemate deepens. Vasco wait. The player pushes. Spurs refuse to blink.

De Zerbi draws a line

Roberto De Zerbi has already emotionally detached from the situation.

The head coach lifted the lid on a key pre-season conversation with Richarlison, a moment that now feels like the turning point in their relationship.

“At the beginning of pre-season I spoke to Richarlison and asked him if he wanted to extend his contract because I was happy to keep him with us,” De Zerbi said.

“He didn’t want to. So, Richarlison is a good player, yes. He was important last season, yes, very important. He’s a good guy, yes. But in the end, I had to stop myself putting pressure on the players if the players show me they want to leave.

“I’m sorry for him, but we have to go to another page and work with Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush.”

That is as clear as it gets. De Zerbi valued Richarlison, tried to commit him to the project, then moved on the moment the forward’s mind turned elsewhere. Tottenham’s attack now orbits Solanke and Marmoush, not the Brazilian.

A stand-off with no easy winner

The picture is stark. Richarlison wants out, ideally to Vasco. He wants freedom from his contract. Spurs want value, or at the very least, control. They hold the paperwork and the extension option. They see no reason to tear it up.

Talks between the club and the player’s representatives are ongoing, and the situation has “escalated in recent days”, but time is the enemy. Brazil’s window is closing. Without a breakthrough, Richarlison faces the prospect of staying at a club whose manager has already “turned the page.”
