Real Madrid's Playmaker Duel: Arda Guler vs Jude Bellingham

Real Madrid are heading for one of the fiercest internal battles of their season, and it all comes down to a single position. One playmaker slot. Two heavyweight contenders: Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Jose Mourinho is shaping his new Real around a double act in the attacking midfield band, operating just behind Kylian Mbappe. It’s the vital hinge between midfield and attack, the zone where games are controlled and broken open. Not long ago, that area looked reserved for Bellingham, almost by default.

Then pre-season ripped up the script.

Bellingham returned late from World Cup duty, and in that brief window Guler seized his chance. The Turk lit up the warm-up fixtures, emerging as one of the standout performers and forcing Mourinho to take a much longer look.

At first, Mourinho tested him deeper, using him as a midfielder. The experiment didn’t last. Guler was pushed higher into that attacking midfield role, and that’s where everything clicked. He dazzled, exceeded internal expectations and, with every touch, moved himself closer to the starting XI.

Now the indications from the training ground are clear: Guler is in pole position to start ahead of Bellingham in Real Madrid’s opening league game against Espanyol on 22 August.

For Bellingham, that means a fight on his hands. To reclaim that spot behind Mbappe, he’ll have to dislodge a teammate in form, in rhythm, and suddenly central to Mourinho’s early-season plans.
