Real Madrid Targets 15-Year-Old JJ Gabriel Amid United Dispute

Real Madrid have launched an aggressive move to prise 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel away from Manchester United’s academy, triggering a brewing registration row around one of England’s most talked‑about teenagers.

Earlier this week, Gabriel formally notified United of his intention to cancel his registration with immediate effect, according to MyJoyOnline. United, though, are pushing back. The club insists his registration remains valid until the end of the season and is prepared to challenge the attempt to walk away.

Gabriel, who holds a European Union passport, turns 16 on October 6. For now, he is not training with United, a striking situation for a player the club once viewed as a potential record‑breaker.

The stand‑off has alerted Europe’s elite. Real Madrid are not alone.

Barcelona, Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern are all monitoring the situation, while Chelsea are also described as having strong interest in the forward. Multiple sources have characterised Madrid’s pursuit as “active”, with the Spanish giants keen to move quickly.

Madrid’s plan is clear: bring Gabriel in as soon as possible and place him with Real Madrid Castilla, their reserve side. Castilla compete in the regionalised third tier of Spanish football, against senior, fully professional teams — a far more demanding environment than age‑group football and one Madrid believe could accelerate his development.

Frustration with United’s promises

Those close to Gabriel feel Manchester United have not delivered on what they outlined as his pathway to the first team. Inside the camp, there was an expectation he could have become the youngest first‑team player in the club’s history had he featured in the English Football League Cup tie against Brighton.

That appearance never came. The frustration has grown.

Head coach Michael Carrick, who handed Gabriel minutes in a pre‑season friendly against Atletico in Stockholm, has urged caution. He has stressed the need to consider the teenager’s age, welfare and the intense spotlight already building around him.

Gabriel’s representatives reject those concerns. They argue he is ready, both physically and mentally, and point to Max Dowman’s Arsenal debut at 15 as proof that top‑level clubs are willing to trust exceptional talent early.

Legal hurdles and a looming birthday

Any imminent switch is complicated by strict regulations on the registration of underage footballers. Cross‑border moves for minors are heavily controlled, and United’s stance over his existing registration only adds another layer.
