Real Madrid have built a protective wall around Yan Diomande, and it is no coincidence.

The 19-year-old Ivorian is the most expensive signing in the club’s history. Madrid paid 125 million euros to Leipzig, a fee that could climb to 140 million with performance bonuses. A galáctico price tag. A very different treatment.

So far, Diomande has not started a single match for Real Madrid. Not one. His minutes have come late, off the bench, when the game is already shaped and the spotlight is a little softer.

This is not about form, the club insist. It is about design.

José Mourinho has been clear from the outset: Diomande will be eased in. The coach pointed out before the Inter clash that the youngster joined the squad late and must follow a specific roadmap. No shortcuts, no improvisation. Inside the club, the message is the same – there is a plan, and nobody will deviate from it.

That plan carries a ghost from last summer.

He never got the breathing space Diomande is getting now.

Under Xabi Alonso, Mastantuono went straight into the starting XI. Not as a one-off gamble, but across several games. Expectations soared, patience vanished, and the weight of the shirt quickly became crushing. The club hierarchy had talked him up; the pitch exposed how raw he still was.

Gradually, his role shrank. First a regular starter, then a rotation option, then a name on the bench. By this summer, he was out on loan at Fiorentina, a reminder of how quickly a “project” can be pushed out of sight when it fails to explode on cue.

That experience has left scars.

Now, with Diomande, Madrid are refusing to roll the dice. A 125 million euro investment, the biggest in their history, will not be thrown into the fire just to satisfy curiosity or headlines. The minutes will come in doses, the pressure controlled, the adaptation handled on the club’s terms.

Real Madrid have seen what happens when a teenager is rushed into the hurricane. This time, they are determined that the story – and the ending – will be very different.
