Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a line under his formal involvement in the club’s boardroom while remaining tied to the project as co-owner.

The 42-year-old, a key figure in data-led football operations over the past decade, will now take a step back from day-to-day influence at St Mary’s. His departure from the board comes after a period in which his presence around the club had already diminished.

Ankersen’s reduced visibility at Southampton has coincided with his responsibilities as president of Turkish side Goztepe, another club within the Sport Republic portfolio. Even with that growing workload, he had still retained a voice in Southampton’s recruitment strategy, helping shape squads through a familiar analytical lens.

His reputation was forged at Brentford, where he served between 2015 and 2021. That spell covered the club’s rise from Championship contenders to a Premier League side, a promotion widely associated with a clear, numbers-driven model and smart player trading.

At Southampton, Ankersen has operated under the Sport Republic umbrella, the multi-club ownership vehicle fronted by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, who holds the majority stake in the Saints. The group has expanded its reach across Europe, taking majority control of French side Valenciennes and Turkish outfit Goztepe alongside their stake on the south coast.

While Southampton push for stability and a return to the Premier League from the Championship, the wider network faces its own challenges. Goztepe sit bottom of the Turkish Super Lig, a stark reminder that multi-club ownership does not guarantee smooth progress across every front.

Ankersen’s exit from the boardroom narrows his official remit at St Mary’s, but as a co-owner in a sprawling football portfolio, his influence over the direction of the project is far from over.
