Rafael Leao's Future at Milan: Transfer Market Uncertainty

Rafael Leao is back in the thick of it at Milanello, but his future still sits on the transfer market shelf with a week of the window left.

The Portugal international returned to training on Wednesday after 12 days out, rejoining a Milan squad that has already started to imagine life without him. He was absent from the pre-season friendly against Manchester United and left out of the opening Serie A win over Torino, a clear sign of where he currently stands in the club’s plans.

Leao has long spoken about testing himself in the Premier League or LaLiga. This summer was supposed to be the moment the path opened up. Links arrived in waves – including a recent push from Aston Villa – but no deal has crossed the line.

Inside Milan, the tone has hardened. Head coach Ruben Amorim has publicly downplayed his importance, stating that “Rafa is not important,” a stark message for a player who once sat at the heart of the club’s project. On the pitch, the San Siro crowd has already turned its attention to Alphadjo Cisse, the teenage winger who scored his first Serie A goal in Milan’s league opener and looks determined to grab the vacancy on the left.

The club, though, still has a major asset on its books and a firm valuation in mind. Milan are holding out for €50 million. Galatasaray have come closest but are still short, with their current proposal reported at €42m including bonuses. The Turkish side have yet to bridge that gap, leaving negotiations in a stand-off.

Aston Villa’s stance is also blurred. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Premier League club have backed away from a move, while other Italian outlets insist Villa have not completely walked from the table. For now, interest exists, but no one has been willing to hit Milan’s asking price.

So Leao trains. He wears the colours, runs the drills and waits, fully aware that the club has spent the summer trying to usher in a new era without him.

Seven days remain. Either someone pays the price, or Milan start the season with a high-profile forward who knows he was supposed to be on his way out.
