PSG's Last-Minute Collapse of Zion Suzuki Transfer

PSG’s move for Zion Suzuki has fallen apart at the last possible moment, leaving the French champions without the goalkeeper they thought was already in the bag.

The deal with Parma for the 23-year-old Japan international had reached an advanced stage. A fee believed to be around €35 million was agreed, the framework of the player’s contract was in place, and all sides were preparing for the final signatures. PSG even had a flight booked for Suzuki to travel to Paris last Saturday for his medical and to sign.

Then everything blew up.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and RMC, Suzuki’s camp made late financial demands over commissions. Those extra conditions landed on the table just as the move was about to be completed. PSG judged the new figures to be excessive, and the talks collapsed despite the prior agreement with both Parma and the player.

The Paris club had gone far enough with their planning that they were already mapping out Suzuki’s immediate future. One scenario under consideration was to sign him and then loan him to Juventus for a season. That path closed abruptly two days ago when Juve cut off contact with PSG without offering any explanation, killing the loan idea before it could take shape.

With the Suzuki transfer now dead, PSG return to their original goalkeeping hierarchy. Russia international Matvey Safonov stays as the undisputed No 1, with Lucas Chevalier continuing as his understudy, watching the market and waiting to see if the club makes another move before the window shuts.
