PSG's Transfer Moves Impact on Liverpool's Barcola Pursuit

Paris Saint-Germain have stepped on the accelerator in the transfer market again – and this time it could have major consequences for Liverpool.

According to Fabrizio Romano, PSG have reached a verbal agreement with Ajax to sign winger Mika Godts in a package worth €55m (£46.9m). The deal is not signed yet, with documents still to be exchanged, but the framework is in place and the Belgian is expected to head to Paris.

Godts is set to arrive alongside Ferran Torres, with PSG also striking a separate agreement with Barcelona for the Spain international. Two new wide forwards in one swoop. Luis Enrique’s attacking options, already stacked, are about to look even more formidable.

And that is where Liverpool come in.

Barcola’s path to the exit

The double move for Godts and Torres effectively shoves Bradley Barcola closer to the door. With fresh competition arriving in his position, the France international is now the obvious candidate to make way as PSG look to trim what they see as surplus pieces in the squad.

PSG’s stance has been firm. Their ideal asking price for Barcola sits around £145m. Liverpool’s internal valuation is understood to be closer to £100m. There is a sizeable gap, but the dynamics are changing.

Once Godts and Torres are officially through the door, the pressure shifts. PSG will want to sell. Liverpool know it. The question is how far the French champions are willing to climb down, and how far Liverpool are prepared to stretch to meet them somewhere in the middle.

For now, talks are ongoing. Liverpool have been in regular contact with PSG this week, clearly braced for this exact chain of events. The moment Paris locked in their incoming wingers, the path cleared for serious negotiations over Barcola.

Liverpool’s missed wingers – and the one they really want

There will be plenty at Anfield who look at Godts and Torres and wonder what might have been. Both are high-level wide options. Both are on the move. Neither has ended up on Merseyside.

Liverpool did not seriously push for either. That will be quickly forgotten, though, if Richard Hughes and his recruitment team manage to land Barcola – the player they have clearly ring-fenced as a priority target.

There is also admiration for Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old talent currently alongside Barcola. Any move there would be one for the future, but his name is in the conversation as Liverpool weigh up how aggressively to reshape their forward line.

Clock ticking before Newcastle

The calendar adds another layer of urgency. Liverpool travel to face Newcastle away in nine days. They have already lost the luxury of a full pre-season bedding-in period for Barcola or any other late arrivals.

Every day without a deal is another day without integration, without tactical work on the training pitch, without the rhythm that comes from playing with new teammates under real pressure.

Yet the Godts agreement, coupled with the Torres deal, should now force the pace. With PSG’s frontline reinforced and the need to offload growing, the conditions are finally there for Liverpool to push this over the line.

The window shuts in September. Liverpool want at least one more major attacking piece in place before then. Whether PSG’s new signings become the catalyst that delivers Barcola to Anfield could define how bold this new era at the club really feels.
