Philippe Coutinho Returns to Santos: A Comeback Story

Philippe Coutinho is back. Back in Brazil, back in Santos colours, back in the game he briefly walked away from.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona playmaker has signed a short-term deal with Santos running until the end of the season, ending a spell without a club after leaving Vasco da Gama in February. Then, he stepped away citing mental exhaustion. Now, he returns with a different energy and a familiar number on his back.

He will wear the No. 11 shirt. At Santos, that number carries weight. This time, it also carries a story of friendship.

Neymar’s messages that wouldn’t stop

Coutinho’s comeback is not just about a contract or a shirt. It is about Neymar, and about a series of messages that slowly pulled him back towards the pitch.

"Neymar certainly played a very important role in my coming here," Coutinho said at his unveiling, as quoted by ESPN. "He's a player who needs no introduction, a friend I've had since childhood, and I think he was the first person in football to send me a message when I left Vasco."

The timing was raw. Coutinho had just decided to step away, drained and unsure if he even wanted to keep playing. The first message from Neymar arrived almost immediately.

"The next day he had already sent me a message, but at that moment I said: 'Look Ney, it would be a pleasure to play with you, but I'm not feeling well right now, it's not possible' and it really didn't make sense to me."

He did not hide from the reality. Football, at that point, simply did not fit into his life.

From “not possible” to “why not?”

The silence didn’t last long. The messages kept coming.

"Months later he contacted me again, but my answer was the same. Then two weeks ago he sent me another message," Coutinho revealed.

This time, something shifted. The idea of playing again no longer felt so distant.

"Then I stopped, reconsidered. I wanted to go back to playing football and I thought: 'Why not?' I'm going to a big club, in another city."

That “why not?” turned into a contract, a presentation, and a fresh challenge at one of Brazil’s most historic clubs.

A personal decision, a professional reset

Coutinho had left Vasco da Gama to prioritise his mental health. For months, returning to the professional game did not make sense to him, and he was clear about that with Neymar.

Now, standing in front of the cameras in Santos, the tone is different. There is relief, but also determination.

"It would be unfair to me not being able to go back to work and not being able to go back to playing football. I wanted to thank the president, Mattos and Ney. I'm happy to accept this challenge."

Santos get an experienced playmaker with something still to prove. Coutinho gets a reset in a new city, alongside a childhood friend who refused to stop calling.
