Philippe Coutinho Joins Santos FC to Reunite with Neymar

Philippe Coutinho has reunited with close friend and Brazil team-mate Neymar at Santos FC, signing a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old playmaker had been without a club since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. He had returned to his boyhood side in 2024 and made 81 appearances before walking away, admitting he was "tired mentally".

Now he steps into another familiar home.

Santos announced his arrival with a touch of nostalgia, posting an old photograph of Coutinho and Neymar as teenagers, then pairing it with a new shot of the duo re-creating the same pose in the gym. The message was clear: two prodigies, back where it all began, now as veterans.

The club also shared a video of Coutinho entering the dressing room, where Neymar greets him with a hug. Coutinho, visibly emotional, says: "If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up."

Neymar returned to Santos, his own childhood club, in January last year. Remarkably, despite sharing a long journey with Brazil’s national team, this will be the first time the friends have played together in club football.

For Coutinho, it adds another chapter to a career that has taken him across Europe’s elite. He came through at Vasco before earning a move to Inter Milan, then truly exploding onto the world stage at Liverpool, where he scored 54 goals in 201 games and became one of the Premier League’s most feared creators.

That form earned him a £142m transfer to Barcelona in 2018, one of the most expensive moves in football history. Spells at Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Al-Duhail followed, before his short-lived return to Vasco.

Now he lands at Santos, older, battle-worn, but back alongside Neymar at last. The question is no longer what they might have been together in their prime. It is what they can still produce, side by side, in the closing stretch of their careers.
