Payne’s Debut Shirt Sparks Bidding Frenzy: From Unknown to Viral Phenomenon

A few weeks ago, few outside New Zealand or the A-League could have picked him out of a line-up. Now a debut jersey worn by defender Payne has triggered a bidding war north of $3,200 and turned an Olimpia auction page into must-watch theatre.

The signed shirt, from his first appearance for the Paraguayan giants, has become the unlikely centrepiece of an official online sale run by the club. It’s a piece of fabric carrying a story no one saw coming.

Payne signed a one-year deal in Asuncion in June, ending a seven-year chapter with Wellington Phoenix and stepping into one of South America’s most demanding football environments. On August 2, against Rubio Nu, he walked into that pressure and treated it like a playground.

Coming off the bench, the veteran full-back needed only minutes to make himself at home, scoring in a 5-0 rout that sent the Olimpia crowd into instant adoption mode. One appearance, one goal, and suddenly the new man in the famous stripes had a moment worth framing.

Now that very shirt is being fought over online.

The explosion didn’t start in Paraguay, though. It started on a phone screen.

Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini, better known as El Scarso, went hunting for the “least-known” player at the 2026 World Cup. He found Payne and turned him into a project, then into a phenomenon. Millions of followers rallied behind the New Zealander, and his Instagram numbers went berserk — from under 5,000 to more than 5.4 million in a matter of days.

The internet picked its cult hero. Olimpia moved quickly to give that story a physical symbol.

In an official club video promoting the auction, Payne leaned into the weight of the shirt he had just begun to wear.

“I know exactly what it means to wear these stripes and play in this shirt, and that's why I want to give it to a true Olimpista,” he said, tying his whirlwind fame back to the terraces that will ultimately judge him.

For most of his career, Payne lived far from the main beams of global attention. He even had a two-year spell at Blackburn Rovers, but work-permit issues shut the door on a competitive debut and kept him in the shadows of English football. Journeyman, not headline act.

That tag no longer fits. Not online, at least.

The current bids for his Olimpia debut jersey still sit miles away from the $7.8 million that a set of Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup shirts fetched at Sotheby’s in December 2023. Yet the comparison itself says everything about how surreal this rise has been. A player who was virtually anonymous to the wider football world only months ago now has a match-worn shirt attracting thousands of dollars and global curiosity.

Inside the club, though, the story has to change gear.

The viral wave has carried Payne into South American consciousness, but Olimpia’s priorities are more traditional: points, performances, trophies. After that emphatic 5-0 start, the focus tightens on sustaining momentum in domestic competition and proving that this is more than a social media sideshow.

For Payne, that means the hard part begins now. He must show, week after week, that he is more than an algorithm’s favourite — that his right boot and defensive instincts can stand up to the relentless physicality and tempo of Paraguayan football. South America does not give out free passes for followers.

Adapt quickly, and he cements his place with one of the continent’s heavyweights for the 2026-27 season. Fall behind the pace, and the story risks becoming a cautionary tale of clicks outpacing careers.

The shirt is already priceless to someone. The question now is whether Payne can make his time in those black-and-white stripes just as valuable on the pitch.
