Ovie Ejaria's Promising Loan at Rangers: A Missed Opportunity

London-born and still eligible for Nigeria, Ovie Ejaria once looked set to carve out a serious future for himself in Glasgow. Under Steven Gerrard at Rangers in 2018-19, the on-loan Liverpool midfielder produced enough flashes of class to stir real excitement, only for the story to end abruptly.

What was meant to be a season-long loan never reached the spring. Ejaria chose to cut his stint short and head back to Anfield in December 2018, a decision that caught Ibrox off guard and left the Rangers hierarchy distinctly unimpressed.

Gerrard did not hide his feelings. Speaking to the Glasgow Times at the time, he said: "Am I disappointed he's gone? Yes. Do I think it's the right decision? No, because I think he had an incredible opportunity here." It was the reaction of a manager who felt a project had been left half-finished.

That frustration stung all the more because Gerrard had already nailed his colours to the mast over Ejaria’s talent. The clearest example came during Rangers’ fraught Europa League play-off against FC Ufa in August 2018, a tie that demanded nerve as much as quality.

After Connor Goldson’s header banked a narrow 1-0 first-leg win at Ibrox, Rangers travelled to Russia with little margin for error. There, at Neftyanik Stadium, Ejaria stepped out of the shadows. He struck an early opener in a gritty 1-1 draw, a goal and performance that dragged Rangers over the line and into the group stage.

Under fierce pressure, the midfielder’s touch and calm stood out. Gerrard, speaking to Rangers TV, did not hold back: "I thought he was magnificent and I think that is his strongest 90 minutes that he has given us so far."

For the former Rangers boss, that night in Ufa felt like a turning point, the moment when potential finally grew into something more substantial. "I think we have seen a lot of flashes and a lot of halves, some good performances," he said, "but I think that's his first real excellent performance that he's announced against a good team. I thought he was excellent from start to finish."

It was the kind of display managers build around. Rangers never got the chance to find out what might have followed.
