Andre Onana's Future: Premier League Talks Amid Trabzon Loan

Andre Onana’s Manchester United future remains parked in Turkey for another year, but his name is still being thrown into Premier League conversations.

The Cameroon international has officially rejoined Trabzonspor on a second consecutive season-long loan for the 2026-27 campaign. There is no option to buy in the deal, a clear sign United are not yet ready to cut ties, with his contract at Old Trafford running until June 2028.

Yet while he prepares for another year in the Turkish Super Lig, former United midfielder Quinton Fortune believes Onana’s skill set still fits the demands of England’s elite.

Fortune: Onana still built for the Premier League

Speaking to Premier Bet, Fortune underlined why top English sides continue to keep an eye on the 30-year-old’s profile, even after a turbulent spell in Manchester.

"Andre Onana could be an asset to Chelsea, Newcastle United or Aston Villa in the Premier League. You can see the quality for playing out from the back as many managers now want with their style of football, he can be your starting point," Fortune said.

That ability to launch attacks, not just stop them, remains the cornerstone of Onana’s appeal. Fortune pointed to the Cameroonian’s passing range as a weapon that can change games.

"When you’ve got a goalkeeper like Onana who can ping a ball 50, 60 yards to your striker or midfielder and break the lines with his passes, that can make a huge difference, and he’s one of the best at it," he added.

The problem has never been his feet. It has been the scrutiny. One high-profile error and the debate ignites again. Fortune knows that life well and believes the mental reset is now crucial.

"He just needs to find his confidence again now because when a goalkeeper makes a mistake unfortunately the whole world sees it. I hope he can get back to his best because when you need a goalkeeper to play out from the back, he can be outstanding."

For now, that rebuild continues in Trabzon. The conversation around his long-term Premier League suitability, though, refuses to go away.

Onana wasn’t the only subject on Fortune’s mind. The former South Africa international also weighed in on Chelsea’s summer business, particularly the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson under Xabi Alonso.

Fortune admires the strategy. He just wishes one part of it had played out at Old Trafford instead.

"Xabi Alonso made some good signings for Chelsea this summer but I wish we could have seen Danny Welbeck return to Manchester United," he told Premier Bet.

By bringing in Welbeck and Henderson, Alonso has gone after more than just technical quality. He has targeted personalities, players who can drag standards up in a young and often volatile dressing room.

"By signing Welbeck and Jordan Henderson he wants to bring in some leaders to set good examples which you need at a club like Chelsea, especially after the experience Alonso had at Real Madrid," Fortune said.

Alonso has lived inside supercharged, star-studded environments. He knows when a squad is missing something you cannot measure on a data sheet. According to Fortune, the Chelsea manager has moved decisively to fix that.

"He’s looked at the Chelsea dressing room, felt that it was lacking something, and brought in the players with the right personalities and experience to make a difference in Henderson and Welbeck. They are not only top, top players but great professionals too."

Chelsea now move into the season with fresh voices and hardened winners in the dressing room. United, meanwhile, watch Welbeck at Stamford Bridge and Onana in Trabzon, and must decide how many of their former and current assets will still shape the Premier League from somewhere else.
