Nottingham Forest Signs Delap for £50m Deal

Nottingham Forest have made their statement move of the summer, sealing the signing of Delap from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £45m, rising by a further £5m in add-ons.

The 23-year-old striker has signed a long-term contract that runs until 2031, committing the prime of his career to the City Ground after just a single season at Stamford Bridge. For Chelsea, it represents sharp business: they bank an instant £20m profit, having brought him in from Ipswich Town for around £30m in June 2025.

Forest, though, are paying for potential and pedigree, not last season’s numbers.

Delap buys into Glasner’s project

Delap arrives talking like a man who wants responsibility, not just minutes.

"I really can't wait to get started, this is a massive club with a big history," he told club media, already leaning into the scale of the move. "I spoke to the manager and I like his way, I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step and hopefully I can bring goals here."

The reference to Oliver Glasner’s style is no throwaway line. Forest’s head coach demands intensity, vertical runs and aggressive transitions – traits that match Delap’s game.

On paper, one league goal in his solitary season at Chelsea hardly screams £50m forward. The context tells a different story.

Delap’s reputation was forged at Ipswich Town during the 2024-25 campaign, where he scored 12 Premier League goals in a struggling side that ultimately went down. He carried a relegation-threatened attack, often on his own, and still found a way to trouble defences.

His numbers with the ball at his feet underline why Forest have pushed so hard. Delap recorded 26 shot-ending carries that season – more than any other striker in the Premier League. Pace, power, and a willingness to drive at defenders turned him into a constant outlet, even when Ipswich were pinned back.

That blend of physicality and direct running, combined with his finishing potential, is what Forest are banking on. The surname helps, too. As the son of former Premier League defender Rory Delap, he knows the demands of the league and the scrutiny that comes with a hefty fee.

Life at Forest will not come with guarantees. Delap steps into a crowded centre-forward department, joining Chris Wood, Igor Jesus and Arnaud Kalimuendo in what shapes up as a fierce four-way fight for the starting role.

Glasner now has contrasting options: Wood’s experience and aerial strength, Igor Jesus’ movement, Kalimuendo’s sharpness, and Delap’s raw power and ball-carrying threat. Whoever leads the line will need to deliver quickly.

That test could start immediately. Delap is in contention to make his debut this weekend as Forest head to Anfield to face Liverpool, looking to shake off back-to-back defeats against Leeds United in both the Premier League opener and the Carabao Cup.
