Northampton Town Signs Leicester Striker Nathan Opoku
Northampton Town have moved to sharpen their attack with the signing of Leicester City forward Nathan Opoku on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old Ghanaian arrives at Sixfields after a winding route through the game. Leicester picked him up from Syracuse University in the United States in 2023, a rare jump straight from US college football into the English game.
Leicester immediately sent him to their Belgian sister club OH Leuven, where he found the net five times and adjusted to European football. Last season he was back in the EFL, on loan at Newport County, and quietly became their main threat. Six goals in 30 League Two appearances were enough to see him finish as the Exiles’ top scorer.
Chris Hogg's Assessment
Cobblers boss Chris Hogg believes that unconventional path is exactly what makes Opoku such an intriguing addition.
“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website.
Hogg stressed that this was not a late scramble but a long-term target finally landed.
“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.”
For Northampton, it is a calculated bet: a forward who has already proved he can handle League Two, now asked to turn that promise into something bigger in Cobblers colours.
