Nordin Jackers Faces Tough Decision at Club Brugge

Nordin Jackers is staring at the kind of decision every goalkeeper dreads.

Once the man trusted to step in for Simon Mignolet, the 29-year-old now finds himself pushed down to third choice at Club Brugge and, with January approaching, effectively nudged towards the exit.

From heir apparent to number three

When Club Brugge brought in Yann Sommer from Inter, the hierarchy seemed clear enough. Sommer as the undisputed number one, Jackers as the experienced back-up. Not ideal for a keeper in his prime, but manageable, especially with a long season and multiple competitions on the calendar.

That plan has been ripped up.

According to HLN, Ivan Leko has now placed 19-year-old Argus Vanden Driessche ahead of Jackers in the pecking order. The teenager is now officially Sommer’s understudy, leaving Jackers as third in line.

For a keeper who came from OH Leuven to compete and who has already shown he can handle the pressure at Jan Breydel, it’s a brutal shift.

Sommer’s shaky start, Vanden Driessche’s big leap

Sommer’s arrival was supposed to bring instant security. Instead, his start to life at Club Brugge has been mixed. He produced some important saves at the weekend against Antwerp, but he was also at fault for the goal Brugge conceded.

On another day, that kind of mistake might have opened the door for a proven deputy like Jackers. Not this time.

The club’s response says everything about how highly they rate Vanden Driessche. At just 19, and with Sommer still bedding in, the youngster has been promoted to second choice. It’s a bold call, and a clear statement about the future direction of the goalkeeping department.

Jackers at a crossroads

For Jackers, the message is unavoidable. At 29, with good performances behind him when he stepped in for Mignolet, he cannot afford to spend his prime years as a third-choice keeper.

There were sections of the Club Brugge support who would have accepted, even welcomed, Jackers as the starter this season. He has shown enough composure and quality in his previous outings to justify that faith. Instead, he now faces the prospect of watching both Sommer and a teenage prospect play ahead of him.

That is not a sustainable situation for an ambitious professional.

Belgian Pro League on alert

A move in January now feels less like an option and more like a necessity. Jackers’ track record in the Belgian Pro League, both at OH Leuven and Brugge, should ensure he is not short of suitors.

Clubs looking for a reliable, ready-made number one know exactly what they would be getting: a keeper who has already proved he can handle big games, big expectations and big clubs.

The door appears to be closing at Club Brugge. The real question is which Belgian side will be quick enough to open theirs.
