Noah Okafor Ends Switzerland Career Under Coach Murat Yakin

Noah Okafor has drawn a hard line under his Switzerland career – at least for as long as Murat Yakin remains in charge.

The Leeds United forward announced on Thursday that he will no longer represent the national team under the current head coach, saying the trust between them has collapsed.

Okafor, 26, has been a part of the Swiss set-up since 2019, collecting 26 caps and emerging as one of the country’s brightest attacking options. Yet at the World Cup he was barely used, handed just 19 minutes as a substitute in Switzerland’s last-32 win over Algeria.

He insists this is not about minutes on the pitch.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Okafor wrote: “My decision has nothing to do with my playing time. Things happened that hurt me deeply. Trust was broken. Commitments were not kept.

“When I was allowed to play against Algeria, people reacted to minor mistakes far away from our goal in a way that hurt me deeply.

“In the weeks that followed, I thought a lot and decided for myself that I no longer want to play for the national team under the current manager.”

The message is blunt. This is about treatment, not tactics. About how he feels he has been handled by Yakin and his staff, not where he appears on the team sheet.

The Swiss FA confirmed it had been informed of Okafor’s stance on Thursday. A spokesperson told Reuters: “We respect his decision and wish him every success with his club.”

For Switzerland, it is a significant rupture with a player in his prime, one who only last summer made a high-profile move from AC Milan to Leeds United for £18m. For Okafor, it is a public and pointed break with a coach who has led the national team since August 2021.

Yakin now prepares for the next international window knowing one of his forwards has effectively shut the door on the national team while he remains in the dugout. Switzerland’s next assignment comes on 26 September, away to North Macedonia in their opening match of the 2026-27 Nations League.

Okafor, meanwhile, turns fully to club football at Elland Road. The question lingers over the national side: how many more relationships can be stretched before something has to give?
