Nico O'Reilly Wins PFA Young Player Award

Nico O'Reilly’s rise from Manchester City’s Under-9s to the PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year stage reached its latest peak under the lights of Manchester’s Opera House on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old full-back collected the award after a season in which he delivered on the biggest stages. He scored twice in last season’s Carabao Cup final to turn the showpiece in City’s favour, added an FA Cup winner’s medal, and helped England secure third place at the World Cup.

Those moments have now been wrapped in individual recognition – and they continue a striking trend.

Five of the last six winners of the PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year award have come through Manchester City’s academy: Phil Foden, twice. Cole Palmer. Morgan Rogers. Now O’Reilly.

For Thomas Krucken, City’s academy director, the evening felt like vindication for more than a decade of work.

“Seeing Nico win the award was an incredibly proud moment for everyone connected to our academy,” Krucken said. “His success is testament to the hard work of the academy staff and coaches who guided him on his journey from our Under-9s all the way towards senior football.

“Nico is an inspiration to everyone at the academy. He is a shining example of how to approach the world of football and be successful. We are all really proud of him and want to send our best wishes to him and his family.

“Having five of the past six winners of the PFA Young Player of the Year award from our academy is an extraordinary achievement for us.”

From a boy in City blue at nine years old to a double goalscorer in a domestic cup final and a World Cup podium finisher, O’Reilly now carries the weight – and the opportunity – of that academy legacy.
