Neymar's Calf Injury Update as Brazil Prepares for World Cup
Neymar has picked up a knock. But for now, Brazil can breathe.
Santos’ Head of Medical Services, Rodrigo Zogaib, confirmed the No. 10 is nursing a small injury in his right calf, an edema suffered during the club’s defeat to Coritiba last Sunday in the Brasileirão. It is the kind of news that usually sends a shiver through a country on the brink of a World Cup. This time, the tone from the club is calm.
Zogaib described the problem as “a small injury” and outlined a clear plan: Neymar should complete his treatment and be ready to report to the Brazilian national team “without limitations” for the start of World Cup preparations at Granja Comary on the 27th of this month.
The diagnosis is precise. According to ge, the edema measures just two millimeters, with an expected treatment window of five to ten days. In medical terms, it is minor. In sporting terms, it is a scare arriving at the worst possible moment.
Santos, though, are optimistic. The club believes Neymar could even be available for the Copa Sudamericana clash against Deportivo Cuenca, a sign they do not see the issue as serious enough to disrupt his short-term rhythm.
Not everyone is quite so relaxed. Journalist Diogo Dantas, from O Globo, reported that the injury would typically demand a “reasonable amount of time” for full recovery and has already triggered concern within Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff. For a player whose recent years have been punctuated by ill-timed setbacks, any hint of physical trouble is enough to sharpen the focus in the national-team camp.
The calendar leaves little room for doubt or delay. Brazil gather at Granja Comary on the 27th, then step out at the Maracanã on the 31st to face Panama in a farewell friendly, one day before the delegation leaves the country. On June 6, already settled in the United States, Ancelotti’s side will meet Egypt in their final test before the World Cup debut.
Between now and then, every session, every sprint, every twist of Neymar’s right calf will be watched with clinical attention. Brazil know the numbers and the measurements. What they really need is their No. 10 walking into camp looking like himself.
