Newcastle’s youth revolution is not slowing down. If anything, it’s accelerating.

With Matthias Jaissle still hunting for proven first-team quality before the transfer window shuts, the club is quietly – and relentlessly – building a second project underneath the surface: a squad of teenagers they believe can define the next era at St James’ Park.

Another La Masia talent in sight

Newcastle have already moved decisively for 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster the midfield. On Wednesday, reports linked the Magpies with an agreement for 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate.

Now comes another name, and another 18-year-old midfielder.

According to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, Newcastle are closing in on Guille Fernández, a highly rated product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy. The move would continue a clear pattern: young, technically gifted midfielders with the potential to grow into long-term pillars.

Fernández reports that Barcelona are currently working on exits for several young players while trying to keep a route back open.

“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” he said. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”

That line tells the story. Barcelona want to sell, but not sever the cord.

Barcelona want control, Newcastle want upside

Guille Fernández has yet to make his senior debut for Barcelona, but he has climbed through the youth ranks and established himself with the club’s reserve side. He is already a Spain Under-19 international and can operate across multiple central midfield roles, the kind of versatility modern coaches crave.

Heading into the 2027-28 season, he carries a market value of around €3 million and is currently listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster. The problem for him is obvious: breaking into a stacked senior midfield at the Camp Nou is a brutal task for any teenager.

Fernández’s report makes it clear that Barcelona do not intend to cut ties completely. Any deal is expected to include some form of buy-back clause or mechanism that allows the Catalan club to retain influence over the player’s longer-term future.

No specific transfer fee or buy-back figures were mentioned, and there is no clarity yet on the structure of the clause. What is clear is that competition exists. Fernández notes that other clubs are in the race, which could nudge the price higher if a bidding war develops.

Even so, the claim that Guille is now “close to Newcastle” points to Newcastle moving aggressively to get this done before others step in.

A two-track rebuild

All of this sits alongside a very different, but equally important, recruitment drive.

Newcastle are not just hoarding prospects. The club is also pushing for a more experienced midfielder capable of stepping straight into the void left by Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. One of the names on their radar is Man City’s Nico Gonzalez – himself a La Masia product – as they search for someone who can immediately lift the level of the first team.

So the picture is layered. On one track, Steur, Bamba, Diabate and now potentially Guille Fernández. On the other, a hunt for ready-made quality to keep Newcastle competitive right now.

If the deal for Guille goes through with Barcelona retaining a buy-back option, it will underline a growing theme: Newcastle are prepared to navigate complex deals and share some future upside if it means landing top young talent today.

The question is no longer whether Newcastle are building for the future. It’s how far they are willing to go with this youth-first strategy while still trying to chase results in the present.
